Liverpool are expected to hand one gifted forward a new contract in the coming days.

While the focus in recent weeks has been on incomings - especially up top - Richard Hughes will have been working away in the background on a fresh deal for one emerging young star.

Rio Ngumoha, who turns 18 on Saturday, put pen to paper on a three-year deal last year following his match-winning intervention against Newcastle.

New deal imminent for Rio Ngumoha

The England international signed the maximum deal allowed given his age - until 2028 - with a view to a longer deal when he became eligible.

That day has now come - with the Liverpool Echo confirming that a new contract for the winger is now only days away.

“His 18th birthday is expected to bring about a new contract in the coming days that is more in line with his growing importance and that might mark a natural point for Ngumoha and his family to reflect on what has been achieved to date,” the report reads.

Liverpool to tie down Ngumoha amid Bayern Munich interest

Ngumoha was the subject of intense transfer speculation earlier this summer when Bayern Munich knocked on his door.

Liverpool were surprised by that approach and made it clear to FC Hollywood that their crown jewel would be going nowhere.

These are uncertain times for Rio - who joined the club’s academy structure from Chelsea back in 2024.

Ngumoha now a threat on both sides

His rise was swift - marking himself out as a genuine option under Arne Slot last season. He did not get as many starts as he might have expected although Slot was always at pains to explain why he thought his usage of Ngumoha was fair and appropriate.

This season - at least until a new right winger is signed - he has been asked to fill in on his less favoured side.

It’s no secret that he likes to play from the left - cutting inside for a shot at goal - but the £123m acquisition of Bradley Barcola from Paris Saint-Germain can only be seen as a threat to Ngumoha.

Whether Andoni Iraola switches him over permanently is not yet known as Barcola is also renowned as a versatile winger who can play either side.

Either way that will be a problem to solve on another day as Liverpool fans can get excited about an imminent contract renewal for one of their most electrifying teenage talents.
