An Evertonian sensation is heading to Liverpool.

For much of their history, Liverpool and Everton shared far more than just a city. In the early decades of English football, it wasn't unusual to see players move directly between the two clubs, with a total of 29 senior footballers crossing the divide over the years.

That was once considered part of the game. Even into the 1980s and 1990s, direct transfers between the Merseyside rivals still happened from time to time.

But football has changed.

The last player to make the switch was Abel Xavier, who joined Liverpool from Everton in 2002. More than two decades later, no senior player has repeated the move, underlining just how rare these transfers have become.

It's a reflection of modern football. Clubs are increasingly reluctant to strengthen their biggest rivals, while supporters are often fiercely opposed to seeing their best players swap sides. Even rumours of a move between local rivals are enough to spark a huge reaction.

The Merseyside rivalry may not carry quite the same hostility as some of football's fiercest derbies, but that doesn't make direct transfers any easier. Everton have no interest in helping Liverpool improve, just as Liverpool would think twice before handing one of their best players to their neighbours.

That is what makes any suggestion of a transfer between the two clubs so intriguing. History shows it has happened before, but in today's game it has become one of the rarest deals in English football.

The idea of a senior player moving from Goodison Park to Anfield, or vice versa, now feels almost unthinkable.

Even at academy level, it rarely happens, and when it does it's usually Everton snapping up a player being released by Liverpool - like Anthony Gordon for example.

In this market, a transfer between Everton and Liverpool would be considered one of the most surprising moves in English football.

However, something unprecedented could now be on the way.

For the first time since Xavier made that switch from Goodison Park to Anfield, Everton could be losing a genuinely massive talent and he could be heading to Liverpool.

Yep, that is right, Liverpool are closing in on a groundbreaking and historic deal. The kind of deal that may insight fury from within Everton's ranks, and the kind of deal that will forever make the player who joins the Reds iconic.

According to a report by Monster Mentality on X, who covers Liverpool's academy extensively, the Reds have won the race to sign Josh Chigwada from Everton who has therefore agreed a move to Anfield.

He's an England U15 international and last season he became the youngest debutant for Everton in the U18 Premier League at just 14-years-old.

The Evertonian sensation is a winger, who is very tricky capable of playing on the right and the left-flank. He's regarded as one of the best academy talents at Everton, and that is demonstrated by how willing they were to throw him in and play U18 football.

At Liverpool, competition for those U18 spots is going to be fierce. Josh Abe is a very talented winger, who is expected to feature at least at the beginning for the U18 side.

There are other exciting attackers like Erik Farkas at the club as well. However, Chigwada could easily find himself with a role to play.

He's that talented that he will likely be involved with the U16s and the U18s.

There is no denying though that this deal could have a seismic impact. Perhaps it's the transfer that ignites more transfers between the two rivals. It's definitely the first high-profile deal between the two clubs in many, many years.
