'Firm fan favourite' midfielder comes back to Liverpool as club issues statement

It promises to be a summer of big change for Liverpool.

On Sunday Anfield waved goodbye to two of their favourites. Mohamed Salah and Andy Robertson will be departing after their glorious, trophy-laden spells.

And there are reports that more players will join them. Alisson Becker is said to be in talks with Juventus while Ibrahima Konate is out of contract in just a few weeks.

Factor in uncertainty around Joe Gomez, Federico Chiesa and Curtis Jones and you can see a clearout on the horizon for Arne Slot and Richard Hughes.

By the time preseason kicks off Arne Slot could be working with a very reduced-looking group. But one player he should have at his disposal - if an injury heals in time - is Luca Stephenson.

Luca Stephenson is coming back

The 22-year-old has spent the last two seasons out on loan with Dundee United. His second spell was curtailed due to a hamstring injury - ending his season early.

Now Dundee United have put out a statement confirming the versatile defender/ midfielder will return to Anfield in the off-season.

“Luca Stephenson returns to Liverpool F.C. following a second loan spell at Tannadice, having become a firm fan favourite across his two seasons with the club,” the statement reads.

“The versatile midfielder made 67 appearances in all competitions during his time as a Terror, contributing eight goals and playing an important role both on and off the pitch.”

Stephenson set to be sold or loaned out

Stephenson was linked with an early return to Liverpool in the January transfer window when Slot was struggling with injuries at right-back.

He stayed put with the Scottish side however - and his future will be decided in summer.

Stephenson - a former Sunderland trainee - signed a new contract before heading out on loan last summer.

The latest reports suggest that Arne Slot and Richard Hughes have got an exit in mind for him this year. Bolton Wanderers and Rangers are among the teams associated with a move for the right-back-cum-centre midfielder.
