Big changes are coming to Liverpool’s backline.

The Reds kicked off the process of renewing the centre of their defence last summer with the signing of Giovanni Leoni from Parma.

His acquisition was followed up by the signing in January of Mor Talla Ndiaye. Sporting director Richard Hughes has also put in place deals to sign Jeremy Jacquet and Ifeanyi Ndukwe.

The loss of Ibrahima Konate on a free transfer means the outgoing Premier League champions need a first-team-ready centre-back option.

And further down the line the club are going to need more defenders - because 2027 is looming into view as a major crossroads.

Quansah has agreed to terms for Liverpool return

Virgil van Dijk is out of contract next summer and his departure will leave a huge gap in Andoni Iraola’s backline.

Adding to that absence will be Joe Gomez - who is also out of contract in 12 months. In fact Gomez could be leaving before that if Richard Hughes agrees to sell him this summer.

Happily for Liverpool there appears to be a plan in place to bring in a £55m defender next summer - with terms already agreed.

The Anfield side made the decision to sell Jarell Quansah to Bayer Leverkusen in summer 2025. The homegrown defender left the club for around £30m - with a buyback included in the deal for around £55m in 2027.

That’s according to a new report in the Liverpool Echo which also claims the England international has agreed terms ahead of his potential return to Merseyside.

Quansah deal will cost £55m

“The Reds included a buy-back clause in the terms that took Quansah to Leverkusen, which is believed to be around the £55m mark,” the report reads.

“The England centre-half has already agreed personal terms on an Anfield contract, should the Reds decide to exercise that option.”

Quansah has gone from strength to strength since moving to the Bundesliga - forcing himself into contention for the England FIFA World Cup squad.

Liverpool would be getting a highly-prized player with homegrown status should the deal go through and it would solve an upcoming conundrum over Van Dijk - and potentially Gomez - in 2027.
