Liverpool have already begun the process of evolving the team that Arne Slot inherited from Jurgen Klopp.

One of the biggest focusses of Richard Hughes’ recruitment over the last two years has been the Reds’ defence, and that looks set to continue.

Jeremie Frimpong, Milos Kerkez, Giovanni Leoni and Georgi Mamardashvili have all been added to Slot’s side, with a deal for Jeremy Jacquet already announced for this summer.

With uncertainty over the futures of Joe Gomez, Ibrahima Konate and Virgil van Dijk there is more work to be done, but one deal now likely won’t be completed until next year.

Liverpool can sign elite defender for just £52m in 2027

As well as adding fresh faces to the backline, Hughes oversaw the sale of Jarell Quansah last summer when the Englishman joined Bayer Leverkusen for £35 million.

The deal was a good one for everyone involved, Quansah would get more guaranteed game time, Liverpool made a decent return and Leverkusen paid a fair price for a top level defender.

The 23-year-old hasn’t disappointed this season, even earning a call up to Thomas Tuchel’s World Cup squad with England, and his development will please Bayer Leverkusen.

The Reds will be keeping a close eye on his development too, as the club inserted a buy-back clause into the deal last summer.

The club had the option to buy Quansah back for €80 million (~£69m) this summer, an option that they will pass on, but that figure drops to €60 million (~£52m) in the summer of 2027.

That’s according to German outlet Bild, who claim the England international will stay put until at least 2027, despite his impressive performances.

Both Van Dijk and Gomez are on deals that expire in 2027 and, although extensions are a possibility, Liverpool will likely be looking to replace the pair next summer.

Having the option to bring an elite defender like Quansah back to the club is an excellent bit of business by Hughes, and it would be no surprise to see the Reds activate the €60m clause next summer.
