Liverpool transfer news: International midfielder agrees massive Reds contract
An international midfielder has agreed a contract offer from Liverpool.
It's a frustrating transfer window for the Reds at the moment. Liverpool seem to be moving very slowly, even though there are a lot of issues to address within the squad.
The club's head-coach, Andoni Iraola, insisted in his first press conference that Liverpool are going to need to make more signings and that the club is working on it.
However, so far things have been very quiet. Apart from the signing of Victor Munoz, most of the news about Liverpool's activity in the market has been disappointing.
Yan Diomande rejected a move to Anfield, with his preference to join Paris Saint Germain. Meanwhile, Michael Edwards has resigned from his role at the club.
It's not the ideal start to the summer. Right now Liverpool will be anxiously waiting to see what happens with the future of Bradley Barcola, who appears to be the perfect alternative solution to Diomande.
But a lot will hinge on whether PSG are able to get Diomande, before they would be willing to sanction a sale for Barcola. That makes things very complicated.
It rightfully leaves a lot of Liverpool fans anxiously waiting to be disappointed again, as we have often been.
There's so much focus on the attack and the winger situation, many people have overlooked the fact that Liverpool also need midfielders.
Especially, because of the uncertainty around several of the club's current players.
Alexis Mac Allister's contract talks have reportedly stalled, while Curtis Jones is about to enter the final year of his current deal. With speculation continuing over both players' futures, Liverpool are keeping their options open in case they need to act.
As things stand, the club are preparing for the possibility of a major midfield reshuffle. The expectation is that Liverpool will look to bring in at least two new midfielders this summer, although that number could increase if Mac Allister and Jones both leave before the window closes.
Whatever happens, strengthening the middle of the pitch is expected to be one of Hughes' main objectives. Liverpool want to add quality, competition and long-term depth to a position that could look very different by the start of next season, ensuring the squad is well equipped for the years ahead.
Naturally, there will also be players who can step up from the academy, including an international midfielder who has now agreed to a contract offer from Liverpool.
Among the players hoping to give Iraola extra depth in midfield is Kyle Kelly.
He is an U21 midfielder for the club, and has has been a regular for St Kitts and Nevis at senior international level for over a year now, despite not yet making his appearance for the club's first-team.
Kelly is very versatile which makes him a useful addition in the squad. He'll turn 21-years-old in October and has been training in front of Iraola over the past week.
What's interesting is that his contract actually expired at the end of the season. Liverpool confirmed an offer had been made to him, and that offer has now been accepted.
Liverpool Academy on Instagram confirmed this agreement in a post, reporting that Kelly had signed a one-year extension that will see him stay at Anfield.
It's a smart move for the international midfielder and this summer is a great opportunity for him to make a mark in front of a new coach.
Especially, while some of the club's more senior midfield options are away.
