Reports have begun to emerge that Ibrahima Konate is closing in on a Liverpool contract renewal.

The 26-year-old’s future has been in doubt for over a year - as his 2026 contract expiry date ticked closer.

Having signed for the Reds back in 2021 from RB Leipzig for £35m the France international established himself at the heart of Arne Slot’s defence last season.

Konate picked up the Premier League title alongside Virgil van Dijk - bringing into sharp focus the need for Richard Hughes to sort out a new deal.

Despite extensive talks links with Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain and others persisted.

For now however it looks as though interest from elsewhere has subsided and Ibou will ink a new long-term deal imminently.

Konate could get a PSG clause

Konate spoke about the deal last week - effectively pledging his future to the Anfield club - but the contract frustratingly remains unsigned.

Right now fans could be forgiven for wondering what the holdup is.

According to DAVEOCKOP there could be a sting in the tail with a specific contract detail still being ironed out.

The report claims that Konate would like a PSG-specific clause attached to the contract - although it insists that the final agreement has not yet been drawn up.

The clause could be worth £60m however it must be added that a release clause in any Liverpool deal would be unprecedented.

£60m homecoming clause

“Whether that clause ultimately makes it into the final agreement remains to be seen, but the fact it is being discussed can explain why a deal that seemed close on paper has taken a little longer to finalise than many expected,” the report reads.

Anfield Watch brought you news last year that PSG were looking at Konate as part of a new defensive rebuild. Last summer Luis Enrique’s side went for Iliya Zabarnyi instead although the Ukraine international has been disappointing thus far.

Marquinhos is also expected to move on soon - meaning plenty of spaces opening up for a Konate deal.

Born and raised in the French capital it is believed Konate was a PSG fan as a boy although it remains to be seen whether he will get a homecoming clause as a result of this new Liverpool deal.
