Liverpool get green light in deal for World Cup midfield star
Liverpool have recently been linked with a move for Manu Kone.
The Frenchman, 25, currently plays for Roma in Serie A. He was first linked with a move to Anfield back in 2023 - while still a player for Borussia Monchengladbach.
Following a move to Roma in 2024 - initially on loan - he sealed a permanent deal with the Giallorossi in 2025. But various reports now suggest that the former Gladbach metronome is once again on the Reds’ radar.
Liverpool may need a midfield refit
Liverpool have been tipped to conduct a midfield refit this summer - especially if Curtis Jones is to depart. With the England international being targetted by Inter Milan his departure would open up a gap in the outgoing Premier League champions’ midfield.
And Kone could be the one - with a deal perhaps to be discussed once his participation at the FIFA World Cup with France is at an end.
Roma could require sales admits Gasperini
Liverpool have also been given encouragement to chase a deal by Gian Piero Gasperini - the Roma head coach. Owing to UEFA financial regulations Roma could be forced into sales that they would rather not have to conduct.
“Will he stay? I think these Financial Fair Play conditions vary from team to team; they're not precise,” he is reported to have said per La Gazzetta dello Sport.
“It's undeniable that Roma knew they needed to balance their books.
“I hope that reaching the Champions League will be enough, but it's clear that balance sheets are crucial for clubs, and there will be more clarity in the coming weeks."
Gap opens up for Kone deal
So Richard Hughes may have a slight gap opening up to conduct a brilliant bit of business for a long-standing Liverpool target.
Kone has not only been excellent throughout his time in Serie A but he has also been a consistent presence in the French midfield this tournament.
He is the right kind of profile - and the right calibre of player - to improve Liverpool should Jones be sold.
