Fabrizio Romano says Newcastle now want to sign Liverpool title-winner

Liverpool face uncertainty over their centre-back options ahead of the transfer window opening.

Although Virgil van Dijk has been secured on a new contract until 2027, other Reds’ defenders see their futures under scrutiny.

First up, there’s Ibrahima Konate. Under contract until 2026, if Liverpool don’t get a renewal sorted soon then they could be forced to cash in on the Frenchman.

With Konate looking for a vast pay increase there is no guarantee that Liverpool will meet his demands.

Then there’s Joe Gomez. The long-serving Liverpool stopper could see his Anfield career ended following a frustrating season on a personal level.

If a decent bid materialises for the England man, he too could be on his way.

Liverpool also have the option of cashing in on Jarell Quansah.

Quansah attracting interest

As a homegrown player, any fees banked for the 22-year-old will be marked down as pure profit - providing a healthy boost to the balance sheet.

Quansah started the season in possession of the starting shirt but quickly lost his place to Konate.

Having signed a new long-term deal in 2024, Liverpool are quite well protected from a transfer fee perspective when it comes to Quansah.

Indeed, it’s been speculated that it could take as much as £30 million to convince them to sell. That price tag hasn’t put suitors off however with Fabrizio Romano now claiming there is plenty of interest in the England squad member ahead of the window opening.

Newcastle a possibility says Romano

“Will Liverpool look to sell Quansah in the summer amid reported interest from Newcastle?” he was asked in his GIVEMESPORT newsletter.

“It's a possibility. It's not Liverpool trying to sell him but the player attracting interest with Newcastle and German clubs keen.”

The Magpies are looking at a centre-back restock of their own while Everton are among the Premier League teams also listed as interested.

Bundesliga interest could come from Bayer Leverkusen, with Jonathan Tah out of contract and apparently on the verge of leaving.

Not a lot of German sides further down the food chain would be able to finance a deal of that magnitude. It remains to be seen where Quansah ends up but if he does leave it would provide a decent cash boost for sporting director Richard Hughes.
