Liverpool explode into race for France World Cup star
Liverpool may end up having to make significant midfield readjustments during the current transfer period.
Alexis Mac Allister has been linked with the exit door - due to his contract expiring in 2028 and no talks taking place over a new deal. Curtis Jones could also be sold and Inter Milan are expected to come back with a new bid for the £35m-rated playmaker.
Other fringe players - such as Harvey Elliott and Stefan Bajcetic - may also make way and deplete numbers in the middle even further.
Liverpool may step up midfielder chase
And should those outgoings go through then new coach Andoni Iraola and sporting director Richard Hughes will be short of options.
There now exists the possibility that the outgoing Premier League champions will move back in for an old flame - first linked with the club back in 2023.
Back then Manu Kone was a Borussia Monchengladbach player - linked with a €40m move to Liverpool as a new No6. But an injury scuppered any chance of a deal with the France international subsequently joining Roma.
Liverpool want deal for Manu Kone
The FIFA World Cup midfield star moved to the Italian capital side on an initial loan deal before an €18m permanent transfer kicked in in summer 2025.
But Kone could be on the move again once his participation in the World Cup is over. That’s according to a report via the Kopite View - which claims the Reds are currently ahead of Manchester United in the race for the former Toulouse talent.
Liverpool lead Man Utd in Kone chase
“Liverpool have registered interest in Manu Koné, with personal terms not expected to present any issues if the club decide to proceed,” the report reads.
“Liverpool’s interest is currently more advanced than Manchester United’s.”
The report also claims that Richard Hughes is also fighting it out with Man Utd for Joao Gomes - the Wolves metronome who is set to be sold this summer.
“João Gomes also remains under consideration, with both clubs weighing up the two midfielders as potential options,” the report reads.
However with Man Utd now pursuing a deal for Youri Tielemans it could offer the Anfield side a free run at the Brazilian.
