Liverpool informed £35m midfielder wants to leave
Liverpool may end up altering the structure of their midfield this summer.
Top stars like Ayyoub Bouaddi, Adam Wharton and Alex Scott have all been linked with inbound Anfield deals.
The Reds have been relying on the same cast of midfield characters for a couple of seasons now and it’s clear that improvements are needed from that sector.
But any deals are going to be heavily contingent on players leaving.
Liverpool's midfielders have got expiring contracts
Alexis Mac Allister, 27, has been linked with Real Madrid with no new contract on the horizon and his deal expiring in 2028. And a trio of midfielders see their contracts ending next summer - plunging their future on Merseyside into doubt.
Harvey Elliott, 23, has returned from an unproductive loan spell at Aston Villa and is being assessed by new head coach Andoni Iraola.
Stefan Bajcetic - on the comeback trail from a serious injury - is a target for Sevilla among others in La Liga and is believed to favour a move home to Spain.
And the case of Curtis Jones is a complex one to say the least.
Curtis Jones wanted by Inter Milan
With only one year left on his deal this summer represents the final opportunity for Richard Hughes to cash in on the 25-year-old.
But Inter Milan have stubbornly refused to meet Liverpool’s asking price for the £35m-rated homegrown star. So far their bids have fallen well short of what the Merseysiders require - and they are even prepared to keep him around instead of selling him cheaply.
A report in talkSPORT claims Liverpool have knocked back Inter’s latest efforts to sign Jones - around £27m. It remains to be seen how high the Nerazzurri will go in talks for the six-cap England international before the window closes on September 1.
Cristian Chivu - Inter’s Serie A-winning coach - rates Jones highly and would like to have him onboarded swiftly.
Curtis Jones wants to leave Liverpool
And the report also adds that Jones wants out this summer - amid speculation that he has already agreed terms on a five-year deal at San Siro.
“Jones is looking to leave Anfield this summer, with Inter keen on signing him, having seen another offer rebuffed in January,” the report reads.
Jones - a two-time Premier League title winner - will no doubt be frustrated at his role over the last couple of seasons.
He has been unable to nail down a starting spot with Arne Slot preferring to use him as a substitute and - latterly in the Dutchman’s reign - at right-back.
But there is an opportunity for a fresh start under Andoni Iraola - who is reported to have met Jones for showdown talks earlier this week.
Right now his future is under threat but he will have a chance to stake a claim for a midfield berth next week when Liverpool jet out for their preseason tour of the United States.
