Liverpool stalwart to be replaced by Andoni Iraola in 2027

Andoni Iraola may have only just been appointed as Liverpool's boss but, he's already made plenty of changes.

Obviously, moving from Bournemouth to Liverpool is a massive step-up but, so far in the Premier League, his team have remained unbeaten.

Friday's 2-0 win against Ipswich was the first time that things really seemed to click at Anfield and, if they can keep up that level of performance they'll be well on their way back to the top of the Premier League table.

However, if there's anything that the Reds' fanbase have learnt about Liverpool in the past it's that consistency, apart from when Jurgen Klopp was in charge, is very hard to come by.

So, with this in mind, it's hardly a surprise to see the Reds' squad constantly change every season.

And, even though the summer transfer window has just slammed shut, Liverpool already seem to be casting half an eye towards the January transfer window.

Liverpool want to sign a new midfielder to replace Alexis Mac Allister in 2027

For most of the summer transfer window, Alexis Mac Allister was the talk of the town.

The Argentinian was linked with a handful of clubs over the course of the window and, although he stayed put, he got rather upset by Liverpool not offering him a new contract.

However, after his performances from the 2025-26 season, it's clear to see why the Reds are being a little more hesitant than they usually would be to extend the deal of one of their regular starters.

Talk of a new midfielder making their way to L4 was rife throughout the window with players such as Lamine Camara and Adam Wharton apparently on the cusp of a move.

Obviously, none of these transfers ended up coming to fruition but, that doesn't mean the Anfield outfit weren't thinking about the future deals that they'd like to make with journalist Ben Jacobs now sharing a new update on the Reds' transfer plans.

"He [Mac Allister] would be open to a new deal. Manchester City had made an inquiry over the summer and were told the player was not for sale," he said to talkSPORT.

"But Liverpool's perspective is that you have two different things at play. One is, are you going to renew? The other is, are you going to eke out every game and minute of the existing deal, even if the player leaves for less or even on a free transfer?

"At the moment, Liverpool's plan is to add a midfielder in Mac Allister's position in 2027. And if they do so, Mac Allister falls down the pecking order.

"That's why, at the moment, they're not prepared to offer him a new deal, even though there is value for him, certainly between now and next summer."

Obviously, Mac Allister's form picked up quite a lot during the 2026 World Cup with the Argentinian becoming one of his countries most important players.

In fact, he almost won his second-ever World Cup thanks to the performances that Argentina were putting in.

However, it wasn't meant to be as, in the end, Spain managed to beat Lionel Scaloni's men 1-0 after extra time.

But, with how well Mac Allister performed, most fans thought that some big money deals would come through the Anfield doors for him.

And, even though enquiries were made about a potential Anfield exit, the midfielder stayed put.

Over the last couple years, many different midfielders have been linked with a Liverpool move and, right now finding a new midfielder to bring in feels like it's going to be their main priority in 2027.

Obviously, this is good news as Iraola's double pivot system could definitely do with some fresh blood being injected into it but, unless the Reds figure out who they want to replace Mac Allister, they're going to have a lot of questions to answer.
