Liverpool risk Rio Ngumoha with heartbreaking decision
Liverpool are taking a real chance with Rio Ngumoha after a heartbreaking decision.
It is firmly the end of an era at Liverpool this summer. Mo Salah and Andy Robertson both depart the club - two of the faces of their success over the past decade.
It really just leaves Virgil van Dijk and Alisson Becker as the stars from Jurgen Klopp’s dream team. And Alisson isn’t necessarily sticking around, either.
The decision to move on from Robertson is a notable one. Liverpool didn’t actually offer him a contract in the end after it became clear that the two parties had different desires.
The Scot wants to play. The club could only offer him a backup role - no contract offer necessary, then.
But in losing Robertson, Liverpool take a massive chance with Rio Ngumoha. The left-back has been their safety net for the wonderkid, with Arne Slot almost always making sure they’re on the pitch at the same time.
Robertson brings a wealth of experience to make up for Ngumoha’s lack of it. He guides him through matches and it should be no surprise to anyone that the teenager feels he’s benefitted from it all.
"Mo really helped me especially during the start of pre-season along with Robbo, and because Robbo is a left-back he helps me even more because he's such an experienced player," he told LFCTV.
"For him to play behind me is great and he is teaching me a lot."
Ngumoha will lose that this summer and Robertson certainly won’t be replaced by anyone boasting his level of experience. Or quality, for that matter.
The hope will be that Ngumoha can kick on another level on his own and without that safety net behind him. But it does feel like a risk - and potentially a needless one.
Andy Robertson: Situation Summary
Departure Confirmation and Legacy
Liverpool officially confirmed on April 9, 2026, that Andy Robertson will depart the club upon the expiry of his contract this summer. The 32-year-old vice-captain leaves as a club legend after a nine-year tenure, having made 373 appearances and winning every major honour, including two Premier League titles and the Champions League. Robertson revealed that while he held honest discussions with the club throughout the season, no formal contract offer was made, as he expressed a clear desire to play more regular football. He received a poignant standing ovation during a lap of honour following Liverpool's 2–0 win over Fulham on April 11, marking the beginning of a "long goodbye" alongside the also-departing Mohamed Salah.
Current Season and Future Destination
During the 2025–2026 campaign, Robertson has transitioned into a mentor and squad player following the emergence of Milos Kerkez as the primary left-back. Despite reduced minutes, he has recorded 31 appearances, contributing two goals and two assists across all competitions. Tottenham Hotspur has emerged as the frontrunner for his signature, though interest remains from Napoli, Juventus, and Atletico Madrid. Robertson has stated his intention to settle his future before captaining Scotland at the 2026 World Cup, which begins against Haiti on June 14. For now, he remains focused on Liverpool's remaining fixtures, including the critical Champions League quarter-final return leg against Paris Saint-Germain.
