Liverpool make fresh plans to finally sign long-term target

Over the summer, Liverpool were linked with a whole host of players.

Arne Slot was sacked and Andoni Iraola was brought in which meant that plenty of change was already scheduled to take place.

And, while things have started off quite slowly with only a few wins, the fact that the Reds are still unbeaten across all competitions is fairly impressive.

Indeed, Liverpool did manage to bring in a fair few new faces over the summer but, it still feels like more additions and potentially even exits are needed.

That is, especially if Iraola wants to get his first-team squad back to their best.

So, the fact that new links with players are continuing to emerge despite the transfer window being shut is rather reassuring with a previously-linked player now making his way back onto the Reds' shortlist.

Liverpool want to sign Micky van de Ven from Tottenham again

One of the main areas of Liverpool's team that needed upgrading in the summer was their defence.

Ibrahima Konate and Andy Robertson both exited Anfield and, while the Scotsman was replaced by Kostas Tsimikas, the Reds still needed a new centre-back which is where Jeremy Jacquet came in.

However, even after both of these moves, thanks to injuries and unavailability, Liverpool were still short at the back which resulted in Ronald Araujo joining on a season-long loan.

And, to the surprise of many, the Uruguayan has been pivotal to the Reds this term.

But, before Araujo and Jacquet were signed, many other players emerged as potential options with Micky van de Ven being one of them.

Unfortunately, that deal never came to fruition and the Dutchman ended up signing a contract extension with Tottenham but, since Spurs have failed to meet expectations once again, it seems like Liverpool are about to try and make a move for the Dutchman once again.

"Liverpool are plotting a move to sign Tottenham Hotspur star Micky van de Ven as they put plans in place to strengthen at the back," Football Insider wrote.

"Andoni Iraola's side are making long-term plans to sign a new centre-back as they prepare for Virgil van Dijk to leave the club upon the expiry of his contract next summer.

"The centre-back's fellow countryman has been high on their list for a long time, and following Tottenham's slow start to the new season, they could try to take advantage.

"Roberto De Zerbi's side are understood to be reluctant to lose their captain, and will demand a significant fee, especially if they are to sell to a Premier League rival.

"Van de Ven, however, is believed to be open to a move to Anfield given Tottenham's recent struggles and would welcome the opportunity to discuss terms over a move."

Liverpool signing Micky van de Ven would be a bold move

On paper, Van de Ven looks like he'd be a perfect signing for Liverpool.

However, since he's only just signed a new deal with Spurs and hasn't really been in the best run of form lately, it doesn't feel as good as what it did last season.

Since the Dutchman has extended his contract, it's very likely that he'd cost a hefty chunk of change for Liverpool to bring in.

But, with his lightning-quick speed, his versatility and experience, it is probably going to be hard to find another player who ticks all of those boxes.

That is, especially since left-back is a major problem area for Liverpool at the moment.

Obviously, many changes are expected to take place at Anfield over the next few months so the rumour mill is very likely to go into overdrive.

However, as long as Iraola and Julian Ward both know who they want to sign and for how much, that's all that fans can really ask for.
