Andoni Iraola's top target makes so much sense for Liverpool

Liverpool may have welcomed four new players through the Anfield doors over the summer but, there are still a couple of areas among their ranks that need upgrading.

Their midfield is probably their worst area at the moment but, since Andoni Iraola doesn't seem all that bothered about improving the middle of the park, other signings are likely to end higher up on the Reds' shortlist.

Once again, Liverpool spent well over £150 million on new players and, somewhat surprisingly, the one who cost them nothing in transfer fees (Ronald Araujo) has been their best performer.

And, even though they've clearly spent a hefty chunk of change on improving their ranks, it's now clear why one of Liverpool's top targets makes so much sense for them to buy.

Araujo may be managing to hold down his place in Liverpool's starting XI but, since his transfer was only a season-long loan, his future is still undecided.

Of course, Liverpool have a €55 million option to buy the Uruguayan in June 2027 but, since he'll be 28 years old by then, it's unclear whether the Reds will want to spend all that money on him.

This has then led to many rumours emerging with Anfield Watch even revealing that SL Benfica's Daniel Banjaqui is Liverpool's top target for right-back.

And, while the defender may not be a player that most people will have heard of, his performances this season have been impressive.

He made his European debut against AC Milan last week and, was easily one of Marco Silva's best performers.

The right-back is only 18 years old so, he'd obviously be a player for Liverpool to work on but, with the potential he has, he could quickly become an important player for Liverpool in the future.

Indeed, the €50 million that Benfica want for the youngster feels a tad extortionate but, since one of Liverpool's main issues is their lack of homegrown players, Banjaqui could be the perfect transfer.

One of the main problems that Liverpool were faced with over the summer was the number of homegrown players among their ranks.

Jarell Quansah, Caoimhin Kelleher and Curtis Jones have all been sold over the last couple of years which has left the Reds with barely any homegrown players to choose from.

In fact, both Wataru Endo and Federico Chiesa were left out of Andoni Iraola's Champions League squad due to the lack of space he had in his squad.

So, over the summer, many different players who were trained in England for three years before turning 21 were linked with an Anfield switch.

In the end, no homegrown players were brought in which left the Reds in a bit of a pickle.

So, with this in mind, it's clear why Banjaqui would be perfect for Liverpool.

Since he's still so young, by the time he'd need to be registered, he'd be homegrown at Liverpool and, up until then, he wouldn't need to be registered for the Premier League and would be allowed to go on the Reds' B-list for the Champions League.

Not only would this give Iraola another option among his ranks but it would also allow them to lock down one of the most sought-after youngsters in the world.

Here's hoping that a deal can be agreed in January.
