There's only one transfer worth pursuing from Tottenham for Richard Hughes.

Liverpool currently are in the midst of a complete metamorphosis. They were wrapped in a cocoon under Arne Slot last season, and after a strong summer there's hope Andoni Iraola can help the Reds reemerge as a splendid butterfly.

But before that, there will be growing pains.

This summer will be the summer when Michael Edwards and Richard Hughes really begin to put their stamp on how they want this Liverpool squad to look like. Their influence is already visible in Liverpool’s recruitment strategy, which has focused on securing some of the most exciting young talents in world football with a clear long-term vision.

Every move appears deliberate, guided by a plan that extends well beyond the demands of the current season. Rather than searching for quick fixes, Liverpool are laying the foundations for sustained success over the next decade.

It represents the first real phase of the post-Jürgen Klopp era. While the results may not yet fully reflect the progress being made, the club appears to be building in the right way, with a strong emphasis on long-term growth and stability.

Richard Hughes deserves credit for the work being done behind the scenes. The early signs from Liverpool’s new additions have been highly encouraging, with several already showing why they were identified as key pieces of the club’s future.

Players such as Hugo Ekitike, Florian Wirtz and Milos Kerkez have all offered glimpses of their immense potential, suggesting they could become central figures in Liverpool’s next great team.

A central part of Liverpool’s ongoing rebuild will be reshaping the defence , and, in many ways, determining what the post-Virgil van Dijk era ultimately looks like. Whether Ibrahima Konaté stays or leaves, one thing is clear: the Reds need greater depth at the back.

Questions remain over Joe Gomez’s ability to stay fit across a full season, while Van Dijk, despite continuing to perform at an elite level, is inevitably entering the latter stages of his career. Strengthening the defensive unit is no longer optional; it is a necessity.

There is, however, reason for optimism.

The arrivals of highly-rated youngsters Giovanni Leoni and Jeremy Jacquet provide exciting foundations for the future, while prospects such as Ifeanyi Ndukwe and Mor Talla Ndiaye further reinforce Liverpool’s growing pool of defensive talent.

Yet Liverpool’s rebuild cannot rely solely on potential. The squad still requires additional depth, experience and proven quality if it is to remain competitive on multiple fronts. Sporting director Richard Hughes appears well aware of that reality and is actively exploring the market.

That has led many supporters to look towards Tottenham. With Spurs undergoing significant change, opportunities could emerge for rival clubs to take advantage. It is a situation Liverpool’s hierarchy will understand well, particularly given Michael Edwards’ distant ties to the North London club.

Several Tottenham players have already been linked with a move to Anfield, including Archie Gray, Lucas Bergvall and Micky van de Ven. All are talented options in their own right.

But in truth, there is only one Spurs player Liverpool should be targeting.

Luka Vuskovic.

The highly regarded young defender is wanted by Brighton this summer but Liverpool are now also in the mix.

That's according to Caught Offside.

Vuskovic has been on the club's radar for several years. He first made headlines at just 16, featuring in Croatia’s fiercely contested Eternal Derby and immediately standing out.

As far back as 2023, Liverpool had the opportunity to secure his signature, highlighting just how long he has been viewed as a special talent.

Vuskovic ranked among the top five centre-backs for defensive duels won (75%), aerial duels won (65%) and interceptions (6.02 per 90 minutes) in the Bundesliga last season.

He is an incredibly talented defender who can play across the defensive line, even as a full-back but most importantly both as a left-sided and right-sided centre-back.

In terms of his ability, it's remarkable what he is doing at his age. Vuskovic's reading of the game is elite. He is incredibly strong in the air and already very physical.

On top of that, he has this poise and composure on the ball. He's constantly looking to play vertically.

And then there is his aerial threat. Vuskovic has incredible power and he can score a lot of goals. He scored seven goals in the Jupiler Pro League last season and has scored four in the Bundesliga.

In essence, he is perfect. If Liverpool are serious, they simply have to bring him to Anfield. He can be the best defender in the world one day. And he's the only one worth signing from Tottenham.
