Liverpool have been a free-spending club for the last three windows, adding over £650 million worth of talent.

Andoni Iraola didn’t walk into a squad ready to compete however, and there is still plenty of work to be done in the transfer market as well as on the training ground before the Reds can compete on all fronts again.

Several areas need addressing over the next 9 months, but one of the most pressing is Liverpool’s midfield.

Too often under Iraola the Reds have lost the midfield battle, and their weakness has affected results.

It is clear that Liverpool need to add a midfielder, and a recent report suggests that they are in the driving seat for one who could cost £100 million.

Liverpool in pole position for another £100 million player

Earlier this season Liverpool became the first team to field three players that cost over £100 million at the same time.

By the end of January they could become the first team to field four.

Bournemouth’s Alex Scott has been the subject of many discussions among the Anfield faithful in recent weeks, the Bournemouth man is reportedly held in high regard by Iraola and he could well be heading to Merseyside this winter.

That’s according to a report from Mail Sport, which claims that sources at Bournemouth believe that Liverpool are not only serious in the chase for Scott, but are actually in the driving seat due to Iraola’s connection with the 23-year-old.

As it is expected that Scott will demand a fee of over £100 million, many Reds will be surprised to hear that Iraola’s side lead Chelsea in the battle for the England international.

Liverpool have proven that they are not afraid to spend in recent windows though, and there is little evidence to suggest that their spending spree is done yet.

The report does point out that it would be in Bournemouth’s interest to make Chelsea believe that Liverpool are winning the race to try and encourage a bold bid in the winter.

There is no doubt that the Reds’ interest is genuine, but their capacity or willingness to spend another £100 million mid-season is a doubt.

With only 18 months remaining on his contract it feels like Scott’s future will be decided sooner rather than later, but it isn’t yet clear what that means for Liverpool.
