Liverpool have huge chance to rectify £47m mistake in January

Andoni Iraola and Richard Hughes were expected to completely change Liverpool's first-team squad this season.

The Reds' sporting director obviously had a very expensive summer last time around with many people thinking that Liverpool's business would be mostly done for the next couple of seasons.

However, that has been far from the case with the Anfield almost breaking their transfer record with the new arrival of Bradley Barcola.

Despite this big-money move, there are still some obvious gaps among Liverpool's ranks that could've really been done with getting sorted this summer.

However, since that hasn't happened, all eyes will turn towards the January window, after fans have seen how their team ends up getting on.

Liverpool must make their move for Lamine Camara in January

Liverpool's midfield is still arguably their main problem area.

Alexis Mac Allister and Ryan Gravenberch both massively underperformed last term and, with Curtis Jones now gone, there aren't really many options for Iraola to choose from.

Ever since the 2025-26 season ended, fans have known that a new number six is needed because, as good as Gravenberch can be, he just isn't a natural defensive midfielder.

So, that's why most people expected at least one new midfielder to be welcomed through the Anfield doors.

However, as the transfer window went on, it wad clear that wasn't going to happen with almost all of their long-term targets being bought by other clubs.

That is, except from Lamine Camara who, despite having a £47 million agreement lined up to join Chelsea in January, ended up staying at AS Monaco.

Lamine Camara would solve Liverpool's midfield problems

The fact that Chelsea had a £47 million deal agreed for Camara is a tad mental.

The Senegal international is easily one of Monaco's best players but, because of their financial situation, they have to sell their players to make ends meet.

In fact, the only reason that a deal was laid out in the first place was because Everton agreed a deal with Folarin Balogun but then pulled out of it which left them with a massive hole to fill.

Since before the summer window even opened, Camara has been linked with a Liverpool switch.

Mamadou Sangare was another and, with his recent outings for Brentford, you can see why Liverpool wanted him.

But, since Camara didn't end up joining Chelsea, a deal for him to join the Reds could definitely be on.

Indeed, some sales would probably have to be made so that the Reds can raise the funds they need but, if they did manage to get a deal over the line for him, he'd help solve a lot of their problems.

Each of these reasons are why it was a mistake for Liverpool to not sign him now.
