FSG take crucial decision over Arne Slot's future
It’s been a difficult season for Arne Slot and his Liverpool squad.
The defending Premier League champions spent £450m in last summer’s transfer window with a view to getting even better. Only it’s not worked out like that.
The Anfield club were embarrassed in both domestic cups and comprehensively beaten in the Champions League against Paris Saint-Germain.
Slot, 47, was reeling under fan pressure with the widespread sentiment that he should be relieved of his duties.
Under contract until 2027 it was suggested that FSG would make an early call on Slot’s tenure and replace him over summer with a coach like Xabi Alonso.
Arne Slot steadies the ship
But Slot has steadied the ship in recent matches - results-wise. Liverpool are now one win away from securing Champions League football for next season.
And that means the Dutchman will have fulfilled one of his key objectives at the end of a testing campaign. Moreover that achievement will be enough to see Slot keep his job for one more season at least according to a report in Football Insider.
“FSG plan to stick by Slot barring a catastrophic finish to the campaign, such as a run of four consecutive defeats ending their hopes of a top-five Premier League finish and Champions League qualification,” the report reads.
“With only one win needed to secure a Champions League position, Slot’s job at Liverpool is seen as safe.”
FSG: Slot a near guarantee to stay
A late-season collapse from Chelsea has effectively eliminated the Londoners from the race for Champions League football. And with Aston Villa losing to Fulham at the weekend it is Liverpool who are now in fourth place in the table.
The Reds still have to play the teams around them in the shape of Manchester United, Villa and Chelsea before the end of the top-flight season.
With the hard work done however - and Liverpool boasting an eight-point Champions League buffer - it looks like Arne Slot has done enough to secure the job for another campaign.
