Florian Wirtz is someone who divides opinion in Merseyside, with the German struggling to find consistency since his arrival at Anfield.

When the 23-year-old arrived at Liverpool for around £115 million, a British record transfer fee at the time, expectations were sky high.

It wasn’t entirely clear how the creative sensation would fit into the Reds’ system, but it felt like the Premier League champions were adding one of the best players in football.

Wirtz was a crucial part of Bayer Leverkusen’s success in Germany and many presumed that his move to Liverpool would take his game to the next level, but the opposite has happened.

Has Klopp helped Wirtz’s Liverpool struggles?

The German has seriously struggled to find any kind of consistency at Liverpool, but hopes were high that some time with legendary former Reds’ boss Jurgen Klopp could push the 23-year-old in the right direction.

Klopp took charge of Germany for the first time this international break, and Liverpool’s play maker is clearly a big part of his plans.

Wirtz played 205 minutes for his country during the international break, including two full-90s, and was one of the standout performers for Klopp’s side.

The hope that Klopp could help nurture Liverpool’s struggling star seem to have been realised, but the question of how those performances will translate into his domestic form persists.

Speaking after Germany’s 2-0 win over Serbia, a game in which he scored, Wirtz said: “The players around me made things much easier for me tonight. There was so much activity around me, and when I get that, it is easier for me to shine again."

The international break has clearly offered Andoni Iraola an insight into how to get the best out of Wirtz, get the players around him moving, but it is unrealistic to assume the Spaniard will make significant changes to his system just to get the best out of one player.

The key to making Wirtz successful at Liverpool will be to get him playing well the Iraola way and, whilst the international break may have boosted his confidence, it remains to be seen whether time with Klopp will help the German adapt.

It is still fairly early days for Wirtz, who is contracted at Anfield until 2030, and there is plenty of time for the 23-year-old to become the £115 million player that Liverpool signed.

Getting Wirtz firing remains one of Iraola’s biggest challenges, and the Spaniard will be trying his best to get the movement his play maker desires in order to bring his performances for Germany back to England.

It is way too early to say whether working under Klopp has helped Wirtz, but early signs are positive and things seem to be trending in the right direction.
