Liverpool are under threat right now and must turn things around. A bombshell €90m deal proves that.

Liverpool have been slow this summer. Very slow, in fact, as they’ve failed to replace Mohamed Salah, nor have they made any moves post-Ibrahima Konate’s departure.

Now, you can argue that Jeremy Jacquet will replace his compatriot but the Reds signed him while believing Konate was sticking around. Things haven’t gone to plan, in other words.

Victor Munoz remains the only first-team signing, arriving alongside Jacquet, whose deal was completed in January. It’s not what Liverpool needed after a disappointing campaign - they’ve gone further backwards, essentially, even if there is hope around Andoni Iraola.

What makes this particularly bad is that their rivals have taken massive steps forward. Manchester United have rebuilt their midfield, while Manchester City went all-out to do the same.

Chelsea have broken the record for an English player by signing Morgan Rogers, and he isn’t even their only arrival. Even Tottenham Hotspur have done exciting things, rebuilding their defence and signing Sandro Tonali for £100m.

But perhaps the most worrying is Arsenal. Buying from a position of strength, the Gunners haven’t tried to shake things up too much - a complete contrast to Liverpool’s summer after a title win.

Reports are growing, though, that they’re about to sign Bruno Guimaraes from Newcastle United. ESPN claims the deal will cost around €90m (£70m up front) it represents an incredible investment to improve.

After all, Arsenal’s midfield base was arguably their strongest asset last season as Declan Rice and Martin Zubimendi were outstanding. Adding Guimaraes, one of the absolute best midfielders in Europe last season, is an incredible statement of intent.

And it’s one that really shines a light on Liverpool’s lack of action. Their rivals are improving and the title winners, who were already ahead of them, are unquestionably taking another jump here.

All while Liverpool are behind where they were a few months ago. With one month to go in the transfer window, some magic needs to happen. The Reds can’t afford for it not to.
