Levi Colwill has revealed how one ex-Liverpool favourite actually helped make up his mind about staying at Chelsea.

Anfield Watch reported that the 20-year-old centre back was target for Liverpool earlier this summer and was seen as both a solution for the left side of the defence and a potential long-term successor for new club captain Virgil van Dijk.

However, Liverpool's short to medium term chances of landing Colwill were put to bed when the England star signed a new six-year contract at Stamford Bridge this August.

Liverpool did not sign any defender instead this summer, instead focussing their recruitment efforts on the midfield and bringing in four new faces (Alexis Mac Allister, Dominink Szoboszlai, Wataru Endo and Ryan Gravenberch). Reports have claimed that the Reds are still in the market for a young, preferably left-sided centre back but are prepared to wait until future windows to land the right target.

Meanwhile, Colwill has claimed that it was actually a Liverpool legend in Adam Lallana who did the Reds no favours by helping to convince him to commit his future to Chelsea.

The two were teammates at Brighton in 2022/23 and Colwill revealed he sought Lallana's advice about new Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino – with the midfielder having played under the manager in his Southampton days – before making a decision on his new contract.

“I have had conversations with Adam,” said Colwill, as quoted by the Mirror. “And he told me about how much of a good guy he (Pochettino) was and he thinks he is a really good manager and I took that on board when I was making my decision.

“When I finally met him (Pochettino), I realised everything Adam said was true.”

Colwill has played every minute of Chelsea's Premier League campaign prior to the international break, though the Blues have struggled on the pitch, winning just one of their first four games.

Liverpool, meanwhile, sit unbeaten in third with ten points from a possible 12.
