Jurgen Klopp has issued a positive injury update on Liverpool's Thiago Alcantara as the midfielder nears a first-team return.

The Spanish maestro has been absent for the entirety of Liverpool's 2023/24 campaign so far after undergoing hip surgery last season, the Spaniard having suffered several setbacks on his road to recovery.

Thiago Alcantara hasn't featured for the Reds since a handful of cameos back in April, failing to register a single appearance this term.

The 32-year-old's contract expires this summer and given his frequent injury woes, it's expected that Liverpool will opt against offering the former Bayern Munich man a new deal at present.

However, Thiago's quality is undeniable when fit and Klopp has suggested that Liverpool's No. 6 is edging closer to a return to action.

Speaking before Liverpool's clash with Newcastle on New Year's Day, the German admitted that Thiago could return to team training in January, although the Reds are unlikely to rush his comeback.

"I think Thiago will be at one point in team training [in January]," said Klopp. "Thiago is in a very good moment as well but we just have to make sure we don't use him then too early.

"The hip thing in and around that area is just a long-term thing as well. There were for sure days where he could have easily trained but it's all about how can he be back then in the long term, and that's what we are working on."

Liverpool currently find themselves top of the Premier League table despite Thiago's absence, with the midfielder's return potentially proving pivotal in the Reds' push for the title.

Thiago certainly adds a different dynamic to Liverpool's midfield, the La Masia product currently the most technically gifted player at the club.

However, as Klopp mentions, Liverpool will be eager not to rush him back into first-team action, especially given his track record with injuries.
