Fabrizio Romano has confirmed a world-class player is coming to Liverpool.

Liverpool's transfer window has now reached a point where the decisions made over the next few weeks could have a significant impact on the direction of Andoni Iraola's first season.

For Richard Hughes, the issue is no longer simply about adding quality to the squad. It is about addressing clear structural weaknesses before the manager is asked to compete across an entire campaign. If Liverpool reach the end of the window without making substantial additions, scrutiny of Hughes' work as sporting director will naturally intensify.

The concern is that the current squad does not appear particularly well balanced for what Iraola is expected to demand from it. His style requires intensity, athleticism and depth across the pitch, yet Liverpool remain short in several areas and are already dealing with a growing injury list.

Victor Munoz is currently the only senior addition. The Spaniard certainly has the qualities to become an important player. His pace, athleticism and technical ability make him an intriguing signing, but one arrival was never going to address the number of issues Liverpool currently face.

The bigger problem is squad depth.

Rather than entering pre-season with several options for every position, Iraola has spent much of the build-up to the campaign assessing which players are actually available to him. Injuries have reduced his options further, meaning some positions now require immediate attention simply to ensure Liverpool have enough senior players to cope with the opening weeks of the season.

That creates a difficult situation for a new manager.

Iraola needs time to implement his ideas, develop relationships between players and establish his preferred system. Instead, he risks beginning his Liverpool career with a squad that is still being assembled and significant gaps that remain unresolved.

The defensive situation perhaps illustrates the problem better than anywhere else.

Liverpool cannot afford to enter the season relying on a handful of players simply staying fit. The combination of injuries, limited depth and uncertainty over when some of the younger options will be ready means the centre-back position has quickly become one of the club's most pressing priorities.

That makes the remaining weeks of the window particularly important. Liverpool do not simply need more signings; they need the right signings in the positions where Iraola's squad is currently most vulnerable.

Fortunately, Liverpool are working on addressing the biggest issue in the squad which is the Reds' very apparent lack of depth in defence.

Liverpool's centre-back situation is becoming a major concern ahead of the Premier League opener against Newcastle United. Jeremy Jacquet has yet to return to full training and missed the latest pre-season game, leaving his availability uncertain. Joe Gomez is expected to miss the opening weeks after suffering another injury setback, while Giovanni Leoni remains sidelined until September with an ACL injury.

That leaves Virgil van Dijk as the only real certainty to start. Mor Talla Ndiaye could be asked to step in, but throwing the inexperienced defender into a Premier League debut would be a huge gamble. Meanwhile, Ifeanyi Ndukwe remains unavailable without a work permit.

So, in order to combat this Fabrizio Romano has confirmed Ronald Araujo is coming to Liverpool. The transfer guru took to X to confirm that the Barcelona defender was on his way to Anfield today.

Now this is a great signing because in Araujo Liverpool are getting a world-class player. On his day, Araujo is unbeatable. There is a reason why he has spent the majority of his career at Barcelona.

There's a reason why he is their club captain.

A couple of seasons ago he was considered as the next best defender in the world after Virgil van Dijk. He is only 27-years-old, he can still absolutely reach those levels.

It's why this is an exciting transfer, Liverpool are signing a world-class player and they won't even have to pay a transfer fee as he's only coming in on loan.

If Araujo performs to the levels he can, then there is a buy option at just €55m but it's important to stress this is an option, it's not an obligation.

So, it's a smart move all around.
