Liverpool are to enter talks over a deal imminently after an 'exciting development'. The Reds feel they've got something special here.

Liverpool are now moving into a new phase with the close of the transfer window. They need to assess what they've got and set up some major decisions to be made across the season - including where the minutes go.

It's a particular issue in midfield. Liverpool sold Curtis Jones without replacing him and are now left with a series of midfielders who all vaguely want to do the same thing.

They're no.8s, essentially - players who like to attack the box and burst forward from midfield. The problem is that Liverpool lack players to allow them to do that. i.e. defensive midfielders and holding players.

We know Liverpool feel they have to find at least one because they made a call to AS Monaco about Lamine Camara. He certainly won't join the Reds for the first part of the season but January? That's possible.

Until then, Liverpool have to try and construct a midfield that actually works and it seems phase one of that will be putting an awful lot of faith in Trey Nyoni. The teenager will be in the first-team squad this season and is expected to play at least semi-regularly.

The club are impressed with his development. That's according to the Athletic, who report that talks about a new contract are expected imminently to reward Nyoni for that development.

It's a statement. Liverpool have given big contracts to Ryan Gravenberch and Dominik Szoboszlai this year and handing one to Nyoni puts him in that group as a log-term option.

Jones was never given that new deal, after all. Alexis Mac Allister hasn't been, either, and it seems Liverpool see more of a future in Nyoni than they do the Argentine.

The next few months will show if they're correct to believe that.
