Everything you need to know about Daniel Banjaqui as Liverpool ready sensational transfer
Here's everything you need to know about Daniel Banjaqui as Liverpool line-up a move.
Anfield Watch exclusively revealed that the Reds are preparing a transfer for the 18-year-old Portuguese right-back.
He is seen as an ideal option for the Reds' right flank, as Liverpool look to navigate life after Trent Alexander-Arnold.
Banjaqui signed a new deal with Benfica until 2031, but Liverpool believe there is a chance they can sign him from Benfica, where he has only made two appearances for the club's first-team in the league.
He is hugely admired by the club's manager Jose Mourinho, who has been regularly inviting the youngster to train with Benfica's first team and Banjaqui has also been a regular for Benfica's B team, who compete in the lower tiers of Portuguese football.
At the same time, the 18-year-old has also made his debut for Portugal's U21 side last month and scored and assisted against Scotland in a EURO qualifier.
Liverpool scouts will have been following him closely and it was at the U17 World Cup where he caught the eye.
Banjaqui played a key role in Portugal's success at the tournament in Qatar. The youngster played every game in the tournament as he helped Portugal reach the final and triumph over Austria, becoming a world champion.
He won over 60% of his defensive duels, and 6.22 recoveries per 90 minutes but what stood-out was his ability to both drop deeper and help in Portugal's build-up as well as bomb up and down the flank - making him a really outstanding hybrid full-back.
He's also very fast, and he’s the type of defender you don’t really want to come up against because he swarms around you and eats up space.
In the future he will be more of that ‘flyer’ profile, he's been likened to Paris Saint Germain's Nuno Mendes because he’s a strong dribbler and he can be effective in the final third.
Is he ready to make the step-up to Anfield right away and play a role for the first-team?
You'd think not, because he has only played such a small amount of games for Benfica's senior side. However, that might not be the case.
In his first ever start, he won the most tackles (4) and the most duels (12) in the game, but perhaps the most important aspect of his performance was his assist, a clever cross finding Anisio Cabral to help Benfica to a 4-0 victory.
In his first two league appearances, he won a whopping impressive 12 defensive duels from 15 attempts, while completing five dribbles from eight attempts.
He's very direct and he's able to make a massive impact in senior football already.
The UEFA Youth League is another competition where he has excelled, helping his side reach the semi-final of the tournament with three assists and one goal in seven matches so far.
That should give you an indication of just how good he is.
Not many players make such a start in senior football and have impressed at the highest youth competitions.
At 18-years-old, if Liverpool sign him this summer he will count as a homegrown player and that is why the Reds want to bring him in now.
His speed, directness and his ability to deliver in the final third is everything Liverpool want from their full-backs, and that is why he seems like the perfect profile.
