Andoni Iraola’s Liverpool transfer priority is clear, fans will be buzzing

Andoni Iraola was appointed as Liverpool's new head coach after Arne Slot was relieved of his duties.

Before the Dutchman was sacked, most people expected him to stay in charge and end up leading the Reds into the 2026-27 season.

But, fortunately for Liverpool, Fenway Sports Group saw sense and got rid of their Premier League-winning manager.

So, now that Iraola is in charge, things are expected to change with the Spaniard already being one of the main driving forces behind the arrival of Victor Munoz.

However, since Munoz is the only new player to have been signed this summer, it's clear that there's still a lot of work for them to do so that they can get back to the top of the table and start fighting for silverware again.

Liverpool have a lot of areas among their ranks that could do with upgrading but, the fact that Iraola has now made his transfer priority clear is something that should definitely excite fans.

As mentioned, Iraola still has a lot of work to do before his Liverpool squad are ready to challenge for silverware again.

They finished fifth in the Premier League table last time around thanks to the poor performances that their first-team squad were putting in.

So, before the 2026-27 season gets fully underway, this is all expected to change with several players already being linked with an Anfield switch this summer.

Many different players have emerged as potential options but now, thanks to an update from The Guardian, it seems like Iraola's main priority has just been shared.

"Liverpool are looking to strengthen further in attack and defence, with Iraola concerned about his defensive options in particular," they wrote.

Even though every position among Liverpool's ranks apart from goalkeeper could do with a new player or two being added, it feels like their defence is their main problem area.

Virgil van Dijk is going to be 35 years old and, since Ibrahima Konate has exited, there's a massive gap that needs to be plugged.

Of course, Jeremy Jacquet and Giovanni Leoni are both players that Iraola will end up using this season but, since neither of them have played a minute of Premier League football before, it's unclear how well they will do.

Joe Gomez is also another option that they have but, since he's already found himself side-lined due to injury, it's clear that he isn't a player that Liverpool can rely on.

Many defenders have already been linked with an Anfield switch this summer but, since Iraola is now 'concerned' about the options that he has available to him, deals could start falling into place and being sanctioned.

Without a good defence, there's no point in any team trying to get to the top of the table as, at one point or another, they'll be let down and left in the dust.

There's obviously no knowing what the future has in store for Liverpool but, if a new defender or two isn't welcomed through the Anfield doors this summer, some serious questions will need to be asked.
