Andoni Iraola gives 25-year-old Liverpool star one season to save his career

Liverpool have been in the headlines a lot this summer.

The Anfield outfit were expected to massively change their team but, in reality, only four new signings were brought in.

Indeed, some deals for the future have been confirmed but, since the Reds are probably fairly skint after adding Bradley Barcola to their ranks, a lot of their youngsters are expected to have a regular role for Andoni Iraola this summer.

Trey Nyoni, James McConnell and Lewis Koumas are the three academy graduates who are expected to have regular roles in Liverpool's starting XI this time around and, while each of them have plenty of potential to fulfil, it's unclear whether they have what it takes to get back to the top.

However, for one Liverpool player, this could end up being his last chance to save his career in L4.

Giorgi Mamardashvili is Liverpool's second-choice 'keeper for the 2026-27 season

Giorgi Mamardashvili had a bit of a torrid time at Anfield last season.

Even though he featured in 20 games for the Reds last term, he massively underperformed with fans questioning why Richard Hughes chose to replace Caoimhin Kelleher with him.

The Irishman is easily the better goalkeeper out of the two and, since he joined Brentford, he's quickly become one of their most important players.

Kelleher would've also been homegrown for Liverpool which would've been a massive boost.

However, since Mamardashvili is now set to stay put, it feels like he's been given one last chance to save his career.

Because, next season, Lucca Brughmans will be returning from his season-long loan to KRC Genk and will probably want to at least become the Reds' second-choice.

And, while Mamardashvili could get promoted to become Liverpool's starter, if he doesn't get his act together and get things back on track this term, there's no way that Liverpool will want to rely on him as their main goalkeeper for a season.

It might sound harsh to say that Mamardashvili needs to improve everything about his game but, that's the reality of the situation.

When Alisson eventually leaves Liverpool, they will no longer have one of the best goalkeepers in the world.

And, since Mohamed Salah still hasn't been replaced and the Reds' midfield is still a shambles, they already have so many different areas that they need to upgrade.

So, Liverpool not having to focus on signing a new 'keeper next summer would help them out massively.

But, from the way that the Georgian has performed last season, it feels like improving everything about his game is the only way for him to become first-choice.

Indeed, he's only 25 years old so he could eventually get better but, at the moment, it really does feel like the Reds have wasted £30 million trying to replace Kelleher when they should've really just kept him around for as long as possible.
