Andoni Iraola adds 'composed' €50m sensation to his Liverpool shortlist

Andoni Iraola has been thrown into the deep end ever since he was appointed as Liverpool's manager.

The Spaniard left Bournemouth at the end of the 2025-26 season as he felt like he achieved all he could at the Vitality.

This led to several rumours about his next club emerging with AC Milan and Crystal Palace both mooted as potential destinations.

However, after Arne Slot was relieved of his duties, it was clear that there was only going to be one destination for the 44-year-old.

And, in the end, that became true. Iraola has already been the driving force behind Victor Munoz's transfer so, the fact that he's now added another player to his shortlist is hardly surprising.

Iraola has been thrown into the deep end for many reasons.

The main one is the lack of form that Liverpool are in with their defence being one of their main problems.

Ibrahima Konate and Andy Robertson have both exited and, even though Kostas Tsimikas could do a job and fill the void left by Robbo, the Greek international isn't the kind of player they need to win the Premier League title.

So, with Caught Offside now reporting that Daniel Svensson is on Liverpool's radar, it's clear what the Reds' goals are by the time the 2026-27 season fully gets underway.

"Sources close to the agents industry have informed CaughtOffside that Liverpool have placed Daniel Svensson firmly on their transfer agenda and they have a concrete plan to sign the Borussia Dortmund star," they wrote.

"Liverpool’s interest has also been reported by Liverpool.com, which claimed the Reds and Arsenal had both identified the Borussia Dortmund defender as a possible summer target.

"His energy, technical quality and willingness to move centrally would suit a team wanting its full-backs to contribute heavily in possession.

"AC Milan, Juventus and Real Madrid have also been linked, although the strongest interest currently appears to be coming from England.

"Previous reports have valued the defender between €35m and €45m, although growing competition could push the overall package closer to €50m."

Liverpool signing a new left-back could be exactly what Milos Kerkez needs

Last season, Milos Kerkez was brought in for £45 million with most people thinking he'd easily fit into Slot's system.

In fact, the Hungarian was even nominated as the Premier League's best left-back during the 2024-25 campaign so, everybody thought that he'd be an instant upgrade on Robertson.

However, that was far from the case and, by the end of the season, it felt like Slot preferred Robertson over Kerkez due to how calm and collected he was.

Svensson seems to be a similar player to Robertson with his former manager even dubbing him a 'composed' player despite being just 24 years old.

Indeed, the €50 million fee may feel a tad steep but, after playing in 45 games for Dortmund last term and contributing to six goals across all competitions, he feels like the perfect profile for Liverpool to target.

Liverpool adding the Sweden international to their ranks would take a lot of pressure off of Kerkez and would allow him to be a bit more relaxed which would hopefully lead to better performances.

Of course, having two young left-backs to choose from is a bit of a risk but, if Liverpool are wanting to become world-beaters again, they need to get ahead of the game and sign players who they believe will meet their potential and take them back to the top.
