Amazing assist: Liverpool's next Andy Robertson makes himself known

Liverpool's next Andy Robertson has to be a priority. We think his identity is completely clear.

Liverpool do have a left-back problem. Now, you can easily argue that this was inevitable after losing Andy Robertson, arguably the best left-back to ever play for the club.

Finding someone to adequately replace him was always near-impossible, as it is for the likes of Trent Alexander-Arnold and Mohamed Salah. We’ll soon be adding Virgil van Dijk and Alisson Becker to that list, in all honesty.

Liverpool did try to find the right player, of course. Milos Kerkez arrived as the most expensive full-back in club history just last summer, though the jury remains out on whether he’ll be the long-term option.

What we know for sure is that Liverpool need to sign another one. That’s not necessarily a comment on Kerkez - more than Kostas Tsimikas isn’t good enough and will be out of contract soon.

Fortunately, we believe the next Andy Robertson has shown himself.

Leif Davis can play for Liverpool

Leif Davis is off to a bang with Ipswich Town this season. His assist for Emersonn at the weekend was an outstanding cross - one reminiscent of Robertson at his best - and his energy is proving to be a fantastic weapon for his side.

It's easy to watch him and picture Robertson bombing up and down the wing, in other words. The data backs that up, too.

Using our Value Adder model and Davis's 2025/26 season in the Championship, Robertson's 2023/24 campaign scores a 70 per cent similarity score for attacking output. That's very high and, in fact, the 6th highest of any comparison to Davis over the last three seasons within the top five European leagues.

That Robertson campaign is the fifth-most similar campaign when valuing both attack and defence. Though, it's worth noting the other four seasons that compare to Davis: Alex Grimaldo's 2024/25 campaign for Bayer Leverkusen, Sergio Gomez for Real Sociedad in 2024/25 and Federico DiMarco in 2023/24 and 2025/26 - two of the best campaigns of any full-back within the last three seasons.

Of course, Davis did this in the Championship and his season was very similar in 2023/24 - another Championship campaign. He failed to translate that game to the Premier League in 2024/25, however.

But now it's starting to look like he's made the jump. Davis is performing at the level he did last season but now in the Premier League and that would mean he's a truly fantastic left-back.

The kind Liverpool need, too. Someone who consistently creates chances, has plenty of energy, and is ready to make another leap forward.

Robertson was, of course, an unfancied signing from a relegated side. We're starting to wonder if Davis would have been that in 2025 after Ipswich went down.

Of course, he's now 26 and not a 10-year option as Kerkez is. But for five years? We think there's real value for money there and Davis could be exactly what Liverpool are looking for.
