Xabi Alonso is now begging for Liverpool decision
The future of Xabi Alonso has become a hot topic in recent days.
The Spaniard, 44, has been out of work since January when he left his role as Real Madrid head coach. Long thought of as a potential Liverpool manager-in-waiting Alonso nonetheless appears to be moving closer to Chelsea.
The Blues are reeling after another awful season but have according to various reports opened talks with Alonso’s representatives over becoming their next head coach.
Liverpool may well miss out on Alonso for a SECOND time with the former Reds’ midfielder on the shortlist to replace Jurgen Klopp in 2024.
While it’s been played down just how close the World Cup winner was to an Anfield switch there is no doubt he would be a popular appointment.
Alonso played for Liverpool for five years - winning the Champions League among other trophies - and is in many fans’ eyes the ideal successor to Arne Slot.
Liverpool sticking by Slot
He has got title-winning pedigree following a double with Bayer Leverkusen and his work at Madrid should really not be judged in isolation.
Despite Alonso’s availability it is not expected that Liverpool sporting director Richard Hughes will be picking up the phone.
With Slot under contract until 2027 - and decision-makers prioritising stability - it looks as though the Merseysiders will pass up the chance to contract Alonso.
But there may yet be hope for this deal as according to Pete Hall in the iPaper Alonso is still waiting for Liverpool.
Xabi Alonso is waiting for FSG call
If he really wanted the Chelsea job he would have taken it by now - with talks ongoing over the last few weeks. What the former playmaker really wants is a return to Anfield - and he’s keeping his options open for that very reason.
Alonso is playing the waiting game over his Liverpool destiny - determined to hold on long enough and see if FSG dispense with Arne Slot’s services.
Indeed Liverpool is named as the in-demand tactician’s “preferred destination” with a move back in front of the Kop still in play.
Alonso won an unbeaten league and cup double with Leverkusen in 2023/24 - getting the best out of players like Florian Wirtz and Jeremie Frimpong.
His arrival would be a huge boost for a disappointed fanbase - who have watched Slot’s Reds slip from title winners to also-rans in the space of the last year.
