Unseen for 113 years: Arne Slot oversees historic Liverpool failure

A new Liverpool low has happened. Unseen for 113 years but Sunday confirmed it.

Liverpool fell to a 3-2 defeat against Manchester United on Sunday. It was a deserved defeat, too, as the Reds simply were not good enough at Old Trafford.

They slumped to a 2-0 deficit by half-time and only found a way back into the game thanks to awful United errors. The hosts dominated in just about every aspect outside of possession, managing an xG of 2.3 to Liverpool's 0.8.

And with that, United completed the league double over Liverpool for the first time in a decade. It's a terrible outcome, in all honesty, given where the teams were a year ago.

But it does in fact get worse. Manchester City also did the double over the Reds this season and it's the first time that both Manchester clubs did it in the same season since 1913.

A historically awful achievement, then. Liverpool, who have now lost 18 fixtures this season, feel a world away from where they planned to be at the start of this campaign

And it's not exactly clear how they correct the course.

Arne Slot: Situation Summary

Liverpool Performance and Management

As of 4 May 2026, Arne Slot is navigating the most difficult period of his Liverpool tenure. The Reds currently sit fourth in the Premier League, having recently suffered their 11th top-flight defeat of a turbulent campaign in a 3–2 loss to Manchester United on 3 May. Slot’s second season has been marred by a "pitiful" away record against top-half teams—securing just two points from a possible 24—and a title defence that has fallen away, leaving the club fighting to secure Champions League qualification. While the team remains on track for a top-four finish, requiring four points from their final three matches, Slot has faced heavy criticism for his tactical coherence and in-game management.

Future and Speculation

Despite a "disastrous" domestic campaign, FSG are reportedly expected to remain loyal to Slot for the 2026/27 season. Reports from 4 May indicate that while the club has been linked with Xabi Alonso, a managerial change is not currently on the agenda. Slot is reportedly planning a significant summer rebuild, with the club nearing a deal for Feyenoord's Etienne Reijnen to address long-standing set-piece frailties.

Season Record

Slot has recorded 24 wins, 7 draws, and 13 losses across 44 matches in all competitions this season. His win percentage has dipped significantly from 68% in his debut campaign to 55% this term.
