'Underrated' defender now being considered by Liverpool

Liverpool's defensive line has taken a beating this season.

Not only has Giovanni Leoni been ruled out for the entire campaign due to an ACL tear but now, Conor Bradley is also set to be side-lined until the end of the term

Of course, players such as Jeremie Frimpong, Dominik Szoboszlai and Joe Gomez can all plug the gap for now, but, in reality, the Reds would be much better off if they signed a natural right back in the winter transfer window.

Their Premier League title hopes are already in tatters which means that the Reds only have the Champions League and FA Cup to fight for this term.

However, with just three senior centre-backs available to start, this feels like a massive ask for Arne Slot's men which is why it's not a surprise to see several defenders being linked with an Anfield switch this January.

One thing that has been made abundantly clear this season is that Liverpool need some defensive reinforcement.

There have been times this season when the Reds' defence has felt half as good as they were last season and, without any additional players being brought in, things are likely to go from bad to worse rather than improve.

This is why over the last few weeks players such as Marc Guehi, Dayot Upamecano and even Trent Alexander-Arnold have been brought up as potential targets.

However, a new name seems to have appeared on Liverpool's shortlist.

That is, according to a report from German outlet Absolut Fussball who state that Liverpool are now 'considering' a move for Borussia Dortmund's Julian Ryerson.

The right-back is slightly older than the other transfer targets Liverpool have pursued but with the Norwegian's experience in the Bundesliga and the fact that Barcelona were interested in signing him before they went for Joao Cancelo, it's clear that he's a solid player.

The outlet share that his market value is estimated to be worth around £17.3 million and the fact that former Dortmund coach Edin Terzic dubbed him an 'underrated player' proves that he could be an option worth exploring for Slot and Richard Hughes.

Julian Ryerson could be exactly what Liverpool need

Most of Liverpool's transfer recruitment this season has been players with big potential.

Of course, some such as Alexander Isak and even Florian Wirtz are already at the top of their game but with the Reds' team being so young, there's plenty of room for them to develop.

However, with Ryerson being 28 years old, he likely at the peak of his powers already but, the experience that the Norwegian could bring could end up being rather handy.

He's already assisted his Dortmund teammates six times this season which proves how impactful he can be at both ends of the pitch.

If a fee worth around £17 million could be agreed upon, it feels like the transfer would be a no-brainer.
