Three Big Names That Could Leave Liverpool This Summer
Liverpool's ongoing preseason preparations have been turbulent to say the least. First, the departures of club icons Mohamed Salah and Andrew Robertson were announced towards the back end of last season. Then, Ibrahima Konate followed Trent Alexander-Arnold to Real Madrid, also on a free transfer.
Liverpool's Turbulent Summer
Premier League title-winning manager Arne Slot was sacked after a disastrous championship defence in which the Reds slumped down to fifth place in the table, squeezing into the Champions League by just three points. Now, Former Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola has since taken over at Anfield, and he immediately has a rebuilding job on his hands.
Young French defender Jeremy Jacquet has now officially moved to Merseyside after penning a deal to join the club last season. Osasuna winger Víctor Munoz has also been signed in recent days. But, neither of those additions has done anything to convince online betting sites that Liverpool should return to the position of title race favourites ahead of next term.
One can bet on soccer at Bovada and the betting giant currently lists the Reds as a distant 6/1 shot to win the title next season, level with rivals Manchester United. Defending champions Arsenal are the clear 8/5 frontrunners, with Manchester City sandwiched in between at 3/1.
But while the Reds have endured plenty of transfer dealings already this summer, the club could well be set for further marquee departures. Here are three names that could be on their way out of Anfield this summer, if the rumour mill is to be believed.
Cody Gakpo
Liverpool handed an almighty show of faith to Cody Gakpo last summer when the club sold Luis Diaz to Bayern Munich, clearing the way for the Dutchman to secure his spot as the Reds' bona fide starter on the left wing. The former PSV Eindhoven man had shone since heading to Merseyside in the winter of 2023, and handing him the guaranteed starting berth without Diaz breathing down his neck at every given moment was supposed to trigger an upturn in form to spectacular heights. Unfortunately, the opposite has happened.
Throughout the course of the 2025/26 season, Gakpo's miserable finishing ability became impossible to ignore, and the numbers tell a damning story. The Dutchman attempted 87 shots across 36 Premier League appearances, yet only 21 found the target, a shooting accuracy of just 24%. His seven goals came from an npxG of 9.3, meaning he left nearly two and a half goals on the table. He led the entire Premier League in both shots off target and blocked shots - a grim double distinction that became a lightning rod for fan fury.
As such, a clean break is now looking increasingly likely, and there is no shortage of potential suitors. Both Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United are two Premier League outfits thought to be on the hunt for Gakpo's signature. Not only that, but Italian giants AC Milan are also thought to be sniffing around, as are Bayern Munich, the team that signed Diaz, Gakpo's predecessor, 12 months ago. Should a bidding war ensue, the Reds could be set to net a windfall of around £70m.
Curtis Jones
Curtis Jones has had opportunity after opportunity to nail down a spot in Liverpool's first team. He made his Premier League debut way back in the title-winning campaign of 2019/20, before starring the following season as an injury crisis hit Anfield. But in the five years since then, the academy product has never truly looked good enough for a guaranteed starting berth.
Jones is no longer the young prodigy he once was. He is now 25 years of age and entering his prime. Will he develop any further from the level he's currently at? Should Liverpool accept that he will never be anything more than a rotation option? Or will they cash in right now when they have the chance?
Nottingham Forest are rumoured to be interested in the Englishman's services, and they are flush with cash following the £116m departure of Elliot Anderson to Manchester City. Inter Milan are also thought to be on the hunt as they look to freshen up an ageing midfield currently containing the likes of veterans Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Hakan Calhanoglu, and Piotr Zielinski.
Should the Reds sell now, they could well command a fee of upwards of £25m. Is that fee likely to increase should Jones remain at Anfield any longer? Not especially.
Alisson Becker
Long-serving goalkeeper Alisson Becker has been rumoured to be leaving Anfield for the past year. Georgian shot-stopper Giorgi Mamardashvili was brought in from Valencia to ultimately be the Brazilian’s long-term replacement as number one, but several error-strewn displays in his maiden season at Anfield have provided more questions than answers.
Both Juventus and Inter Milan were rumoured to be interested in Alisson, who has already had a successful stint in Serie A with Roma. The latter of that duo is thought to still be lurking. The question is now on the Liverpool brass: Can Mamardashvili be trusted to serve as the undisputed number one? Or is their reliable 33-year-old the safer bet?
