"That wasn’t great" - Gary Neville's verdict on moment from the League Cup final

Commentator Gary Neville has given his verdict on Naby Keita's challenge on Trevoh Chalobah last weekend.

During the second half of the League Cup final between Liverpool and Chelsea, which took place at Wembley, the Guinea international caught the defender in the groin with his studs.

Chalobah reportedly required stitches at the end of the match.

Despite the fact that VAR looked at the slightly reckless tackle from Keita, a red card was not given. Neville has given his thoughts on the situation.

“Well, he (referee Stuart Attwell) has let most things go,” the former Manchester United full-back told Sky Sports, as quoted by HITC. “It did look a little dangerous. Maybe both players went in the same.

“I thought Keita was late, but I might be wrong. That wasn’t great by Keita. That was a foul.

“The referee has got a lot right today and he gets that one wrong. He just misses the ball and it’s that follow through.

“It’s not a red card, but I do think it was a foul.”

Liverpool went on to win the match 11-10 on penalties.

Anfield Watch Verdict

We agree with Neville. The challenge was worthy of a foul, but definitely not a red card. Both Keita and Chalobah contested a 50-50 ball at the end of the day.

There was no malice in the midfielder's challenge. It was just an honest mistake.

You tend to see a few more aggressive challenges in a cup final simply because of what is on the line. Every footballer wants to win major trophies. Therefore, we weren't entirely shocked to see a player needing some treatment post-match.

But, that is just part and parcel of the game. However, we do wish Chalobah a speedy recovery. We never like to see any player injured.
