Sporting director confirms huge transfer could happen with Liverpool
Liverpool could be about to agree to a huge transfer that could have a significant impact on the club.
The club's sporting director Richard Hughes is expected to prioritise midfield reinforcements in the upcoming summer transfer window, though the club’s exact strategy will depend heavily on where they finish in the Premier League.
Behind the scenes, Hughes and the recruitment team have already built an extensive shortlist of potential midfield targets. A variety of profiles are being monitored as Liverpool look to strengthen both the quality and depth of Andoni Iraola's squad.
The diversity of names under consideration highlights a proactive and forward-thinking approach to what could be a crucial summer rebuild.
Rather than focusing on a single type of player, Liverpool are evaluating multiple options to ensure they find the right fit for their tactical structure and long-term planning.
As the transfer window approaches, attention will gradually shift from broad scouting to more decisive decision-making, narrowing the list down to the most suitable candidates.
The final choices will need to balance performance level, positional need, and financial viability as the club prepares for another important phase of squad development.
Hughes is working hard to find the right profile of players needed in order to make Iraola's system work. There will be some key decisions ahead also over the future of the club's current midfield options as well.
Talks over a new contract for Alexis Mac Allister are understood to have stalled, prompting growing uncertainty around his long-term future at Liverpool. At the same time, Wataru Endo could be on his way out this summer, while promising youngster Trey Nyoni may be sent out on loan to gain valuable first-team experience.
Should Liverpool end up losing several midfield options in the same transfer window, the squad’s depth in that area would quickly come under pressure, making reinforcements a clear necessity.
In a period of potential transition, it would be reasonable to expect the club to double down on retaining its existing core—particularly players developed through the academy or classified as homegrown talent.
That expectation is sharpened by last summer’s departures, when Liverpool saw a number of academy graduates and homegrown figures move on, including Jarell Quansah, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Tyler Morton, and Caoimhin Kelleher, all of whom had played important roles in their development pathway at the club.
Given that backdrop, it would appear logical for Liverpool to prioritise keeping hold of the remaining homegrown talent at Anfield. However, that is not necessarily the direction events are taking.
Instead, there is a growing sense that the club could be open to sanctioning a significant deal that would see another highly regarded academy graduate depart this summer, underlining how flexible - and potentially radical- their squad planning may become.
Inter Milan director Piero Ausilio as per Fabrizio Romano just confirmed that the Italian giants are interested in a move for Curtis Jones.
The sporting director said:
“It’s no secret we’re following Curtis Jones. He’s a player we like, we’re not hiding”.
“We will see the developments”.
That's a huge declaration to confirm the reported interest in the Reds' homegrown midfielder, and it's also confirmation that this massive transfer could actually happen.
From Inter's perspective it would be a huge deal bringing in a player of Jones' quality. It would also be a huge deal from Liverpool's perspective, letting yet another homegrown player with immense talent depart the club.
It's fair to say that no fan actually wants the transfer to go through. But it looks like Inter are keen and there is nothing to suggest so far Liverpool are not open to the idea considering there has been no agreement over a new contract with Jones as of yet. With his current deal expiring next summer, a transfer sale is more likely at this stage in what will be a huge deal for the Reds, and could have massive ramifications in terms of how the rest of the summer goes for Liverpool.
