Semenyo blow could see Liverpool FINALLY agree deal for long-time target
Liverpool completely overhauled their squad in the summer off the back of their second Premier League win in five years.
The Reds spent over £400 million on adding fresh talent to the squad, including breaking the club’s record transfer fee twice to sing Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak.
The season hasn’t gone to plan so far, with Arne Slot’s title defence already practically over and several shockingly bad results resulting in the Dutchman’s position at Anfield coming under heavy scrutiny.
For many any hope of Liverpool rescuing their season is pinned on the January transfer window, but things just got a lot more complicated for the Reds.
Semenyo blow could result in Liverpool finally getting former target
It was revealed on Friday night by David Ornstein that Antoine Semenyo, who many had pegged as the man to save Liverpool’s season, would prefer to join Manchester City this summer.
The 25-year-old has been repeatedly linked with a Merseyside move this season, but it now looks as if Liverpool are set to miss out.
Missing out on the Bournemouth forward may not be the end of the world for Slot’s side though, as transfer insider Dean Jones has tipped City to sell one of Savinho, Oscar Bobb or Omar Marmoush in order to make way for Semenyo.
The news that Marmoush, who was a long-time target for Liverpool before he moved to Manchester, is available will no doubt pique the interest of Richard Hughes and Michael Edwards.
Could Liverpool finally land Marmoush a year on?
Marmoush, an Egypt international currently at the Africa Cup of Nations with Mo Salah, was very heavily linked with a move to Anfield before he joined City last January.
The then-25-year-old was lighting up the Bundesliga with Eintracht Frankfurt, scoring 15 goals and assisting a further 10 in 17 appearances, and had an impressive first six months for Pep Guardiola’s side too.
The forward scored seven times and assisted twice in his first half season in the Premier League, but he has failed to cement a place in Guardiola’s plans.
Having played just 13% of available Premier League minutes, albeit partly due to a knee injury, it isn’t hard to imagine a world in which Marmoush is moved on in January.
Both Salah and Marmoush scored in Egypt’s first match at AFCON on Monday night, and Liverpool’s superstar celebrated the occasion by posting a selfie with compatriot after the game.
Missing out on Semenyo would no doubt be a blow, but Liverpool could capitalise by offering Marmoush a fresh start in the Premier League.
