Richard Hughes wins transfer race with bombshell offer
Richard Hughes appears to have won a transfer race for Liverpool by making a massive offer.
Another massive transfer window is around the corner for Liverpool. Not only do they need to improve on a squad that failed to deliver this season, but they need to replace some of the best players to have ever been at the club.
No small task, then.
And that all needs to come alongside the usual business, such as finding young stars to invest in for the long-term. They appear to have found one, too.
Liverpool are on the brink of signing Samuel Martinez from Atletico Nacional in Colombia, a 17-year-old with an incredibly bright future. They've beaten the likes of Barcelona and Borussia Dortmund to get the wonderkid - so how?
Well, journalist Patrick Berger claims the deciding factor was Liverpool's willingness to pay over €800k to get him. Dortmund, despite having an agreement with the player, couldn't justify the kind of money coming from Anfield.
Liverpool must feel very, very confident about this one then. They're not a club who typically overpay for youngsters - something that's cost them deals in the past.
For Martinez, though? They're willing to pay over the odds to get the Colombian. Now we just need to wait and see if he was worth it.
Samuel Martinez: Situation Summary
Liverpool Transfer Agreement Confirmed
As of 23 May 2026, Samuel Martínez is finalising a dream move to Europe. Renowned journalists Fabrizio Romano, Matteo Moretto, and Pipe Sierra have confirmed that Liverpool have reached an agreement to sign the 17-year-old Atlético Nacional prodigy for approximately €1 million ($1 million), outbidding Barcelona and Borussia Dortmund.
Contract and Development Plan
Dubbed "the Jewel of Tuluá" and compared to Kaká, the 1.84m attacking midfielder will remain with Atlético Nacional to develop until he turns 18 in April 2027. He will then formally sign a five-year contract with Liverpool, with the Colombian side retaining a sell-on percentage.
U17 Glory
Martínez recently captained the Colombia U17 national team to a historic CONMEBOL U17 Championship title. He starred as a classic number 10, delivering standout performances in a 3–0 semi-final win over Brazil and a 4–0 final victory against Argentina.
