Richard Hughes U-turn: Liverpool leader will be handed another new contract deal
Liverpool’s leadership group is at risk of being hollowed out substantially over the course of the next year or so.
Mohamed Salah and Andy Robertson are due to leave the club this summer - with Robbo out of contract and Richard Hughes deciding to rip up the Egyptian King’s deal one year ahead of schedule.
And next summer experienced players like Virgil van Dijk and Alisson Becker are also due to leave Anfield following long spells at the club.
Van Dijk is out of contract in 2027 and will be 36 by the time his current £400 per week deal expires.
Alisson meanwhile saw his £150k per week deal extended by a further year after the club triggered an option in his original deal. The 33-year-old is now on track to depart Merseyside by summer 2027 despite heavy transfer interest from Juventus.
New deal for Alisson
However according to a report in Football Insider Alisson may not be done yet.
The Brazil international could soon be offered yet another one-year extension to his deal as club officials are worried about losing so many experienced leaders in a short period of time.
“Liverpool are set to evaluate the possibility of handing a new contract to veteran goalkeeper Alisson next season,” the report reads.
“The Brazilian is due to enter the final year of his deal at Anfield this summer, but the Reds are determined that he is not for sale, despite sustained interest from Juventus.
“They are concerned that selling Alisson as well would leave a void in the leadership group.
“They plan to assess how the 33-year-old performs, with the possibility of a one-year extension potentially on the table if the club are happy that he still has what it takes in the Premier League.”
Alisson's injury concerns
Alisson has been injured once again this season - currently on the sidelines and not expected back until the end of April.
He missed around seven weeks of matches in the autumn too - opening the door to Giorgi Mamardashvili to embark on a run of first-team appearances.
However the Georgian could be set for another season as second fiddle to Alisson if plans for a new contract go ahead.
The 25-year-old has been earmarked as Alisson’s successor in the long term but may seek a loan move if the No1 stays put until 2028.
