£200m duo is coming to save Liverpool from this hell
Liverpool are playing some rotten football right now. A £200m duo is coming to save us all, though.
Liverpool are playing their worst football since arguably the Roy Hodgson era right now. They lack all control in matches, with most coming down to chance.
Will Liverpool get the late goal? Will their opponents? We'll just have to wait and see.
The Reds struggle to create any major chances of note, with most of what they do string together coming from set-pieces in one way or another. Box to box, they're simply nowhere near what they should be and it's become an absolute pain to watch.
A large part of that is a complete inability to break teams down. Liverpool lack the inventiveness going forward and are in need of new ideas.
Those ideas are on the way, though, and in the shape of £200m worth of signings. Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak.
Florian Wirtz: Situation Summary
Current Status and Return Timeline
As of March 4, 2026, Florian Wirtz is sidelined with a back injury sustained during the warm-up before Liverpool’s 1-0 victory over Nottingham Forest on February 22. Head coach Arne Slot confirmed that the German playmaker has missed the last three fixtures, including the 2-1 Premier League defeat to Wolves on March 3. Slot has ruled Wirtz out of the upcoming FA Cup fifth-round tie against Wolves on Friday, March 6, but indicated that a return for the Champions League round-of-16 first leg against Galatasaray on March 10 is the current target.
Adaptation and Performance
After joining Liverpool for a British-record £116 million from Bayer Leverkusen in June 2025, Wirtz experienced a difficult adaptation period, going his first 13 league matches without a goal or assist. However, he found his rhythm in early 2026, recording four goals and two assists during a six-game stretch in January. Across 35 total appearances for the club, he has recorded six goals and eight assists. Arne Slot has credited Wirtz's mid-season improvement to a growing tactical chemistry with teammates, specifically forward Hugo Ekitiké, and noted that the midfielder’s physical durability prior to this back issue was a significant accomplishment given the intensity of the Premier League.
Contract and Future
Wirtz is currently under contract at Anfield until June 30, 2030, making him one of the longest-committed players in the squad. Despite his long-term deal and the club's significant financial investment, his situation remains a point of interest for major European clubs. Liverpool's management continues to view the 22-year-old as a central pillar of their transition under Slot, and there has been no official indication from the club of a willingness to entertain offers during the upcoming summer window.
Alexander Isak: Situation Summary
Record Transfer and Initial Impact
As of March 4, 2026, Alexander Isak’s debut season at Liverpool is defined by a significant injury layoff following a high-profile summer arrival. The Swedish striker joined from Newcastle United on September 1, 2025, for a British-record fee of £125 million, signing a six-year contract reportedly worth £300,000 per week. Prior to his injury, Isak made 16 appearances for the club and scored three goals, though his early integration was hampered by the lack of a full pre-season and a minor groin strain in October.
Injury Status and Recovery
Isak has been sidelined since December 20, 2025, after suffering a fractured fibula and ankle damage during a 2-1 victory over Tottenham Hotspur. The injury required surgery and has kept the number nine out of action for over two months. On February 19, 2026, head coach Arne Slot provided a positive update, noting that Isak had begun outdoor running drills at the AXA Training Centre. While he has not yet returned to full contact training, the club is tentatively targeting a competitive return in late March or early April, provided he successfully completes the final stages of his rehabilitation.
Seasonal Outlook
In Isak's absence, Liverpool has relied on Hugo Ekitiké and Cody Gakpo to lead the line, with the team currently sitting fifth in the Premier League. Arne Slot has emphasized that while Isak is progressing well, the club will not rush his return, acknowledging that it may take time for the striker to regain the elite form he displayed at Newcastle. Both Liverpool and the Swedish national team—now managed by Graham Potter—are monitoring his fitness closely ahead of crucial spring fixtures, including Sweden's World Cup play-offs and Liverpool’s Champions League knockout ties.
Analysis
Wirtz and Isak were Liverpool's major summer signings and the ones supposed to make the big difference this season. Of course, neither have lived up to that billing.
The German, however, has started to. Wirtz was putting in consistent showings before his injury and even with his slow start, he's 7th in the Premier League for created chances (Fotmob).
Isak was the league's second-top scorer last season and at his best, is exactly the kind of forward who can create something from nothing. A versatile striker who can threaten in three or four different ways.
Now, we don't know what state Isak will return in and he'll likely need some time to get up to speed. He will be a threat from the bench at the very least as Liverpool look to play him back in.
There's a chance both are in the matchday squad before this month is out. We fully expect Isak to return next month at the latest.
The club's two record signings can add the extra burst Liverpool desperately need right now - and it should make the difference in this top five race.
