Mohamed Salah's tale of two penalties causes concern against Newcastle

The debate regarding Mohamed Salah and penalties has reared its head once again after the Egyptian missed another spot kick for Liverpool against Newcastle United.

Liverpool should have been ahead after 23 minutes when Anthony Taylor awarded them a penalty for a trip on Luis Diaz in the box, but Salah was unable to convert from the spot for the league leaders.

The Egyptian, who was playing his final game before heading to the Africa Cup of Nations, unleased a typically powerful effort, but slammed it straight down the middle. Unfortunately, Martin Dubravka rebuffed his effort, with Trent Alexander-Arnold missing the follow-up.

Salah did eventually make amends for his penalty miss, scoring from the spot late on after Diogo Jota was felled in the box. Comparatively, it was an incredibly calm penalty from the attacker, the Reds beating the Magpies 4-2 in the end.

However, it's not the first time Salah has missed a penalty for Liverpool this season, the winger seeing his effort saved by Bournemouth's Neto back in August. Luckily on that occasion, he was able to fire home the rebound.

On top of the spot kicks he has missed this season, Salah also put two penalties wide towards then end of last season in games against Bournemouth and Arsenal.

In fact, Liverpool's No. 11 has missed four of his last ten penalties in the Premier League, a tally which extends to seven misses from 38 penalties for the Reds in all competitions.

On top of that, Opta data has revealed that Salah has missed six Premier League penalties for Liverpool, only Steven Gerrard (9) and Michael Owen (7) having missed more in the competition.

While Salah did redeem himself, there may be a few nerves when he steps up to the spot in the future.

With Dominik Szoboszlai and Alexis Mac Allister boasting great penalty records for RB Leipzig and Brighton respectively before their summer moves to Anfield, there will be even greater pressure on Salah moving forward.
