Liverpool transfer news: Reds confirm agreement with brilliant right-back
Liverpool have confirmed an agreement with a brilliant right-back.
Andoni Iraola is expected to bring a completely different identity to Liverpool. His arrival represents a return to a more intense, high-energy style of football - one built around relentless pressing, aggressive defending and a team that constantly looks to play on the front foot.
It’s the type of “heavy metal” football that Liverpool fans became accustomed to during the Jürgen Klopp era, with rapid transitions, coordinated counter-pressing and attacking football that is as exciting to watch as it is effective.
For many supporters, that change will come as a welcome one after the more controlled and, at times, predictable approach seen under Arne Slot.
Of course, caution is still needed. Iraola has not even officially played his first game at Anfield, meaning there are still plenty of unknowns. However, the work he produced at Bournemouth has created plenty of optimism, particularly the team’s structure, intensity and clear attacking identity.
If he can bring those same principles to Liverpool, there is every reason to believe the club could enter an exciting new chapter.
Before that can happen, though, there is significant work to be done - especially in the transfer market. This is not simply a squad that needs improving; it needs the right profiles to allow Iraola’s ideas to thrive.
Liverpool have already kickstarted their summer business with the arrival of Victor Munoz, but he is expected to be just the beginning of what could be a very busy transfer window at Anfield.
For Richard Hughes, this could prove to be one of the defining moments of his time as Liverpool’s sporting director. After receiving criticism for last summer’s recruitment, he now has the opportunity to change the narrative - but the margin for error is incredibly small.
Iraola will need specific player profiles to make his approach successful. Hughes’ challenge is not just to add quality, but to find players who fit the way Liverpool want to play.
The scale of the rebuild is made even clearer by the departures already confirmed. Mohamed Salah, Ibrahima Konate and Andy Robertson have all left, creating major gaps in the squad. Replacing players of that calibre would be hard enough, but Liverpool must also improve their depth if they want to compete on multiple fronts.
This summer could shape the direction of the club for years to come. It is not simply about filling holes left behind - it is about building the foundations of Iraola’s Liverpool and creating a squad capable of sustained success at the highest level.
One of the major changes under Iraola will also be his use of the youth team. Iraola is a great advocate for working with the younger players and this means there should be opportunities handed to a lot of the club's current young stars.
Among them will be Ollie O'Connor. A 17-year-old academy star who has pretty much played everywhere across the midfield over the course of his Liverpool academy career so far but he has recently become a right-back.
At times the youngster has even played as a winger which highlights just how versatile he is and again is similar to Szoboszlai who played out-wide for RB Leipzig and Red Bull Salzburg.
However, last season O'Connor was put in an entirely new role as the club's right-back due to a shortage of options at academy level.
Sounds familiar?
And well just as Szoboszlai had settled in seamlessly in this right-back role, so had O'Connor who has been a key part of Liverpool's U18 and U19 side this season.
Now, with the right-back position still short of depth O'Connor could have a great opportunity in pre-season.
Liverpool certainly hold him in high regard. The club confirmed he had signed a landmark first professional contract with the Reds.
It's a brilliant agreement and O'Connor is one to keep an eye on.
