Euro giants line up shock bid for Liverpool defender

New Liverpool head coach Andoni Iraola has opted to let several young players stay and fight to prove themselves for his opening campaign in charge.

The likes of James McConnell and Trey Nyoni have remained on Merseyside - for now at least - in order to bulk out the Basque tactico’s ranks.

And one other player the 44-year-old has taken a shining to is Luke Chambers.

Amid a defensive crisis during preseason the 22-year-old was pressed into action on the USA tour.

Chambers - left-back by trade - was pressed into action at centre-back Stateside and bagged himself a goal in the process. The left-sider’s future remains uncertain however with reports that his contract is due to expire in 2027.

Now it’s been claimed that Chambers could be made available in January - with Celtic reported by Football Insider to be lining up an offer.

“Celtic are keeping tabs on Liverpool youngster Luke Chambers ahead of the January transfer window,” the report reads.

Luke Chambers remains a well-regarded Liverpool Academy product, but his route to a sustained first-team role is increasingly narrow.

The 22-year-old left-footer joined the club at six, has made four senior appearances, and has accumulated valuable loan experience with Kilmarnock, Wigan Athletic and Charlton Athletic.

Primarily a left-back, Chambers can also cover centre-back and left midfield. At 1.81m, he offers athleticism, technical security and positional flexibility rather than an overpowering physical profile.

His midfield upbringing is evident in his composure in possession and willingness to progress play.

Chambers is a controlled, forward-thinking defender: comfortable receiving under pressure, capable of passing through lines and inclined to read danger early rather than dive into tackles.

He has described himself as a stay-on-his-feet defender who relies on positioning and interceptions.

His Liverpool contract reportedly runs until June 2027, leaving the club with a decision to make over the next year: another development loan, a permanent sale, or a squad-role opportunity.

A permanent move to a Championship or ambitious League One club feels the most plausible outcome.

Chambers’ versatility and senior-loan record should attract interest, but a Liverpool breakthrough would likely require an exceptional campaign and a clear pathway at left-back.
