Richard Hughes arrived at Liverpool to lead the post-Jurgen Klopp shakeup.

Appointed sporting director in 2024 the Scots exec had made his reputation at Bournemouth. His first transfer window was quiet - doing a deal for Federico Chiesa - but he had some success in tying down Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah to new contracts.

Following Liverpool’s Premier League title win under Slot in 2024/25 Hughes set about reordering the squad. He cleared out several top stars - including Darwin Nunez and Luis Diaz - and also failed to get a new deal over the line for Trent Alexander-Arnold.

The Anfield side spent around £450m that summer - on players like Alexander Isak, Florian Wirtz, Hugo Ekitike and others - but got worse.

Arne Slot paid with his job with Hughes overseeing the appointment of Andoni Iraola as a replacement.

He stayed in place for the summer 2026 transfer window - losing Andy Robertson and Ibrahima Konate on frees - and spending big once again on Bradley Barcola.

By the time the window closed it appeared as though Iraola had a squad with gaps everywhere - with no suitable right winger to replace Salah.

Now it’s emerged that the club have been left “frustrated” with Hughes’ spending - transfer campaigns which have damaged the quality in the squad that Iraola has to work with.

Liverpool 'frustrated' by Richard Hughes transfer spending

That’s according to a report in the Athletic which claims that the club have got a job on their hands to correct the errors of the recent past.

“There has been frustration with areas of Liverpool’s recruitment in recent years that has left Andoni Iraola working with a small, unbalanced squad,” the report reads.

“He is managing it well so far, losing just one of his first 12 games in charge, but additional expertise in the scouting department will hopefully help Liverpool to identify more players who can enhance the squad further.”

Hughes left Liverpool following the conclusion of the summer transfer window - pitching up at Al-Hilal in Saudi Arabia. He departs Merseyside with a mixed legacy.

Fans will be grateful for the Van Dijk renewal in particular - albeit the Salah deal was a busted flush. But it may be a case of too much, too soon when it came to reconstructing the title-winning squad. And it may take years to fix.
