Liverpool star jets out with immediate future shrouded in doubt
Liverpool’s 2025/26 season is at an end.
Arne Slot’s men brought the curtain down on a disappointing campaign with a 1-1 draw against Brentford on the final day of the Premier League season.
It was a day that Anfield bid farewell to Andy Robertson and Mohamed Salah - who leave the club after their trophy-laden spells. But uncertainty remains over several other Premier League title-winning stars.
Alisson Becker remains a target for Juventus and could even secure a move to Serie A before the FIFA World Cup kicks off next month.
Curtis Jones is a target for Tottenham and Inter Milan - per various reports - and it’s believed Liverpool would do a deal at £35m for the midfielder.
Konate adds to uncertainty
But the biggest problem right now is Ibrahima Konate. The French defender, 27, was in Slot’s lineup for the Brentford game but may well have kicked a ball for the Reds for the final time.
Despite stating a few weeks ago that a contract renewal was close the centre back is now on track to leave the Merseyside club in just a few weeks.
With his current deal expiring in June 2026 Konate will be soon free to find a new club - unless a last-minute contract deal can be sorted.
According to a report in the Athletic the former RB Leipzig man declined the opportunity to clarify his future following the Brentford game.
Konate contract ends in a few weeks
“Ibrahima Konate’s situation is the most confusing as he’s going to be out of contract in just over a month but is still to extend or explain what happens next,” the report reads.
“Konate also declined interviews with the written media, which only added to the uncertainty. A month has passed since he revealed he was “close to an agreement” and still there’s no formal clarification on what happens next.”
Ben Jacobs writing before the game meanwhile expects the France international’s future to be sorted out “imminently”.
Right now it looks like Konate will be leaving after five years at Anfield. Talks between the player’s entourage and sporting director Richard Hughes have been ongoing for over a year.
It was originally speculated that the club and their defensive linchpin were far apart in terms of salary - with Konate seeking a deal worth over £200k per week.
Liverpool are running out of time to reach a deal with Konate - and he heads off on his post-season break ahead of the World Cup with his immediate Anfield future shrouded in doubt.
