Midfielder meets Andoni Iraola for showdown talks
There are still several moving parts to this Liverpool summer transfer window.
With the likes of Victor Munoz and Jeremy Jacquet safely onboard there is a chase live for a new winger - with Yankuba Minteh and Bradley Barcola in focus.
Outgoings will become a factor too - with Curtis Jones and Stefan Bajcetic thought to be close to securing moves elsewhere.
Jones could be off to Inter Milan if the Italian champions meet Liverpool’s £35m asking price while it would appear Bajcetic is closing in on a bargain deal to join Sevilla.
Andoni Iraola offers Liverpool stars a blank slate
Elsewhere new head coach Andoni Iraola has reportedly pledged to give all his players a fresh start. It will be a blank slate at the AXA Training Centre this summer as the Spanish tactico runs the rule over his new charges.
And sooner or later we can expect a decision to be taken on Harvey Elliott. The 23-year-old playmaker spent last season on loan at Aston Villa - playing a role in bringing the UEFA Europa League to Villa Park.
But it was a deeply disappointing season on a personal level for the midfielder - more or less frozen out of the Premier League picture by Unai Emery.
Harvey Elliott returns to Anfield
It became clear early on that Emery had no intention of playing Elliott in enough games to trigger a £35m permanent deal. And so he returns to Liverpool somewhat unexpectedly with only one year left on his contract.
Sporting director Richard Hughes is running out of time to make money back on Elliott - who is out of contract in 2027. If Liverpool don’t attract suitable bids - or tie him down to a new deal - then it’s likely that the former Fulham player will be leaving for nothing.
Elliott - like everyone else - will be given a chance in preseason after being discarded by Arne Slot during his time in charge. And now it’s been claimed in a report from BBC Sport that the left-footer has already met with Iraola to discuss his fate.
Harvey Elliott meets with Iraola
“Harvey Elliott, after a disappointing loan spell at Aston Villa, has already returned and met Iraola on Tuesday,” the report reads.
Elliott was heavily linked with a permanent exit last summer before an unsatisfying spell at Villa. Certain Premier League teams were linked - as well as RB Leipzig in the Bundesliga - before the choice was made for a loan + obligation deal with the Villans.
With Alexis Mac Allister still at the FIFA World Cup Elliott will have a chance alongside others to show what he can do on the preseason tour to the United States.
He has got enough talent to at least provide an option for Iraola both as an advanced midfielder and right-sided attacker.
Having finished the 2023/24 season in strong form - displacing Dominik Szoboszlai from the lineup - it’s clear that Elliott has a lot to give and just needs a proper run of games to prove himself.
