Dominik Szoboszlai faces UNEASY wait at Liverpool
All could be about to change for Dominik Szoboszlai. The Hungarian faces an uneasy wait at Liverpool as new plans emerge.
Dominik Szoboszlai emerged as a key player for Liverpool this season, if he doesn’t have a renowned song just yet. The star was one of the notable few who didn’t enjoy a personal moment in front of the Kop last Sunday - there wasn’t a song to sing.

But there’s one on the way. Szoboszlai really found his feet under Arne Slot this season, acting as the hard-working pivot player in attacking midfield.
It was Szoboszlai who found the little gaps for forwards to play off of, frequently playing the pass before the chance. He’s the one who drifts into space to give others an out-ball. It’s unglamorous work but there’s no question that fans recognise it.
Slot certainly does. Szoboszlai has played regularly even without the goal and assist numbers you’d like from your attacking midfielder. His pressing and work-rate are so important to the team that he’s moved beyond just raw numbers.
But here’s the thing: that could all change. Szoboszlai has worked hard and done so incredibly well to become Liverpool’s no.10 (wearing the 8) - and he might need to do it all again.

Morgan Rogers? Dominik Szoboszlai?
Liverpool are reportedly looking at Morgan Rogers. That’s according to Fabrizio Romano, talking to Give Me Sport.
It’s not a shock. Rogers has been fantastic for Aston Villa this season, scoring eight goals and assisting another eight. But if Unai Emery’s side don’t make the UEFA Champions League again, they may need to offload a star.
Ollie Watkins has been linked with a move but it’s Rogers who carries the highest value. Liverpool will see him as an ideal homegrown star who can add more goals and assists from the deeper position.
But then, what of Szoboszlai? That’s his role and Liverpool would be signing a replacement who plays it in a different way.
Now, there’s no suggestion whatsoever that the Reds would move on from Szoboszlai. He’s here to stay and is far too talented to let go of without intense pressure to do so.
Instead, we imagine Szoboszlai would play far more often in a deeper role - and it’s one that might really suit him. Essentially, he could be another Alexis Mac Allister.
And that really could end up being Szoboszlai at his best, quite honestly. It would allow him to be a similar player but deeper, with a bit more space to find those pockets that he’s become so effective at utilising.
It could mean more runs from deeper positions - again, something that should suit him. Liverpool would almost certainly benefit from having him alongside Ryan Gravenberch in certain games, purely because of how big a midfield pairing that is.
His Hungarian National Team coach, Marco Rossi, has talked before about Szoboszlai sitting in a deeper role. He believes it could be a natural role.
"I know he said that he doesn't like too much to play in this position," Rossi told Liverpool.com in 2023. "But I really think that in the future, he could be a fantastic number six.
"He has all the skills to be in this position, like [Andrea] Pirlo was, just to give an example. I think Pirlo was the best in this position in the last 15 years, and Dominik has really good skills to play in this position."
It’s one Liverpool may be willing to bank on. Of course, this all depends on Liverpool somehow striking a deal for Rogers (or another no.10) but it appears they’re willing to make Szoboszlai’s role a more flexible one.
Pinging passes from deep? Late runs into the box? Playing facing the goal more? Maybe even more shots from distance? It all does feel like the natural evolution of his game.

We’ll see what happens but after a season where Szoboszlai worked so hard to establish himself, Liverpool appear ready to make him do it all over again. And maybe that’s a very, very good idea.
