It's becoming increasingly obvious Liverpool will need to sign a centre-back this summer.

So much is resting on the fate of Ibrahima Konate who is set to enter the final year of his contract.

Then there is Joe Gomez, who continues to struggle with injuries and last but not least Jarrel Quansah, who probably needs a loan spell in order to build his confidence again.

This is the quartet that makes up Liverpool's back-four. Understandably, Richard Hughes wants to bolster Arne Slot's options. Because at this moment in time Liverpool are only a Virgil van Dijk injury away from total catastrophe.

Dean Huijsen has been touted as Liverpool's number one target but the competition is rife for his services. Pretty much everyone else who are considered Liverpool's rivals also want to sign the Spanish international - and that's before we even start to talk about Real Madrid.

So, Liverpool may have to settle for an alternative option and there is one signing the club is reportedly ready to make, who could be an even better option than Huijsen.

According to Caught Offside Liverpool are 'very keen' on signing Jonathan Tah as a free agent this summer. The report claims Manchester United are also ready to sign the German international.

The 29-year-old seems to always be linked with a move to Anfield and he's someone with a lot of experience.

Tah has won the Bundesliga, he's played in major competitions for Germany. He's been there and done it all.

Crucially, he's an excellent defender. Over the course of his entire Bundesliga career, he has averaged five defensive duels per 90 minutes and has won close to 70% of them.

That's a player who loves winning duels and we know how much of a buzzword that is for Slot.

In many ways, Tah is an even better option than Huijsen. He's definitely more experienced and in a key area way better than the Spanish international at this moment in time.

One of Huijsen's biggest flaws is that despite being a very tall and athletic centre-back, he doesn't win a high percentage of his aerial duels.

This season he's won just 61% of them as per FBref, which is a pretty low figure. It's about 10% below Virgil van Dijk's metrics who wins 70.3% this season.

Jonathan Tah on the other hand is better at both of them in this metric winning 72.5%.

So essentially, Liverpool would be bringing in an aerial monster who wins a high volume of his duels overall. On top of that he's a free agent.

Sure, Liverpool would have to compensate that by offering him higher wages but on paper this is a move that might actually make sense for the Reds if they miss out on Huijsen.

Perhaps after years of links, Tah could finally end up at Liverpool.

I think he's too old for them to sign.
