Arne Slot opens the door for Florian Wirtz transfer

Arne Slot opened the door for Florian Wirtz to join Liverpool on Monday. The Reds are eager to sign the German star.

There’s been plenty of speculation over the last few days that Liverpool are in the race for Florian Wirtz. Now, let’s get one thing clear: Bayern Munich remain the favourites in this race.

But Liverpool feel they’ve got a chance here and will push for Wirtz. It’ll be a record transfer if they can make it happen - likely an English transfer record, in fact.

Wirtz, though, is a world-class talent and one of the best players Liverpool could realistically sign right now. Possibly the outright best.

Hence Liverpool’s eagerness to push for the star. And it appears Arne Slot has just opened the door for the transfer with one very interesting team selection against Brighton.

Arne Slot’s tactical switch

One big question surrounding the move for Wirtz is what it means for Dominik Szoboszlai. The no.10 role is currently his and he’s had a great season - albeit one short on goals and assists.

Liverpool certainly would’t move him on but they’d need a new role for him. Even if it’s one he plays every now and then when Wirtz is in the no.10 role.

Slot gave us all a look at that on Monday against Brighton. He started Szoboszlai in a deeper midfield role, something the Hungarian has been tipped to play before.

It’s a sign that Liverpool are eager to see whether Szoboszlai can adapt to life alongside a different attacking midfielder.

On this occasion, it was Harvey Elliott, who finished the game with a goal and assist - the latter for Szoboszlai. And Liverpool’s no.8 can expect to play this position an awful lot more if Wirtz were to join.

But then, maybe it won’t be Wirtz. Liverpool reportedly have eyes on a different playmaker who could arrive if the German doesn’t.
