Liverpool's defence is in major need of reinforcements.

The Anfield outfit have struggled to keep a lead this season with the club often missing out on much-needed points.

Liverpool are currently sixth in the Premier League and, unless Manchester City and Arsenal end up losing every game until the end of the season, it's hard to see how Arne Slot's men could win the title.

In fact, some fans are even worried that they miss out on the Champions League if they don't get their act together.

This is why the Reds' fanbase have been demanding that Richard Hughes and Slot come together to bring in some fresh defensive talent to help them improve, especially since Ibrahima Konate could still end up exiting Anfield.

And now, they seem to have set their sights on a new Premier League defender who has been in top form for one of Liverpool's rivals.

Liverpool have registered an interest in Newcastle United's Malick Thiaw

Liverpool and Newcastle's fanbases became arch-rivals in the summer transfer window.

The Reds managed to prise Alexander Isak away from St James' Park for a club-record fee which left a sour taste in the mouths of the Magpies' fans.

Since then, each time the clubs have faced one another, there has been nothing but animosity and, after this new update about Malick Thiaw, it doesn't seem like their relationship is going to get any better.

The report from Sports Boom starts by saying that the German centre-back is a 'top target' for Bayern Munich and Manchester United in the upcoming transfer window.

However, a deal won't come cheap as his performances this season could end up commanding a 'hefty fee' from any interested clubs.

And, at the bottom of the introduction, the online news outlet claims that Liverpool are also 'interested' in the 24-year-old ahead of their expected defensive rebuild.

Malick Thiaw would be an interesting transfer for Liverpool

Even though the summer transfer window is still a fair few months away yet, the rumour mill isn't likely to stop turning any time soon.

Liverpool's two main transfer targets in Marc Guehi and Antoine Semenyo were taken away from them in the winter transfer window which means that the Anfield outfit are likely to be exploring the market until the 2026-27 window opens.

It's clear that the Reds need plenty of reinforcement ahead of their next campaign otherwise, they could end up even worse off than they currently find themselves.

Thiaw already has a decent amount of Premier League experience under his belt and, even though the Magpies may demand a hefty fee for him, Slot will know exactly what he's getting, with his adjustment period likely to be minimal.

Even though Konate may end up extending his contract with the current Premier League champions, the Anfield outfit could still do with at least one more centre-back, especially with how injury prone Joe Gomez is.

Indeed, there's still plenty of time for things to change but for now, the thought of signing Thiaw, who has been described as a 'quality' player in the past, should be something that interests all those involved with Liverpool.
